Parks officials: Skate park to open in next 2 weeks

TERRE HAUTE — Skaters throughout Wabash Valley will have a place to ride soon, as Terre Haute Parks Board officials said the new skate park will open within the next two weeks.

“We’re getting close to an opening,” Parks Department superintendent Eddie Bird said Wednesday evening at the group’s regular board meeting.

Bird said the grand opening will be within the next two weeks and will be announced in print and electronic media in advance.

Construction on the skateboard facility at Voorhees Park began in August, and Bird said construction has moved “pretty fast.”

Also on Wednesday’s agenda, Bird said job postings for a pool operator, a maintenance and plumbing operator, and a director and assistant director of recreation have been opened up.

Applicants can go through the City of Terre Haute’s human resources department to apply.

Mary Kramer of Art Spaces Inc. also addressed the board on the group’s plans for a life-size bronze sculpture of Terre Haute poet and philosopher Max Ehrmann.

The sculpture, which has Ehrmann seated on a bench at Wabash Avenue and Seventh Street, will be a part of the Terre Haute Arts Corridor at the Crossroads of America.

Area artist Bill Wolfe will create the sculpture, according to Kramer.

Kramer said other involved departments and agencies, including the city Board of Public Works and Vigo County School Corp. are being consulted, along with the Parks Department, for official approval.

The Parks Board will vote on the matter at its Oct. 22 meeting.
