Police arrest Hymera woman for allegedly driving drunk; 3 children in vehicle

Staff report

HYMERA — A Hymera woman was arrested Thursday after allegedly driving while intoxicated.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office dispatched a possible intoxicated driver operating a black sport utility vehicle on Washington Street entering Shelburn from Indiana 48, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

A trooper pulled over the vehicle and found Daphine A. Murphy, 31, in it with three children.

Murphy allegedly failed a field sobriety test and was given a chemical intoxication test at the Sullivan County jail where she allegedly tested almost twice the legal limit for intoxication, the news release stated.

She was arrested on allegations of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated with a passenger younger than 18 years of age, a class D felony that can carry up to three years imprisonment and a $10,000 fine. Sullivan County Child Protective Services were contacted and assisted until the children, ages 3, 8 and 10, were released to family members.
