Vigo prosecutor files charges in weekend shooting

TERRE HAUTE — A number of felony charges were filed Friday in the case of a weekend shooting that injured at least one person.

Paul “P.J.” Scott, 18, of Terre Haute was charged with burglary as a class-B felony and residential entry as a class-D felony. If convicted, he faces six to 20 years for the B-felony and six months to three years for the class-D felony.

John M. Stoick, 18, of Terre Haute was charged with battery by means of a deadly weapon, a class-C felony, and criminal recklessness, a class-D felony. The C felony carries two to eight years and the D felony carries six months to three years, if Stoick is convicted.

The third person charged, Ryan D. Martin, 19, of Terre Haute, faces two counts of battery resulting in bodily injury and one count of intimidation, all class-D felonies, as well as resisting law enforcement and carrying a handgun without a license, both class-A misdemeanors. If convicted, Martin faces between six months and three years on each of the D felonies and up to a year for each misdemeanor charge.

The charges stem from an incident Sunday evening in which Scott allegedly broke into the dwelling of Stoick with an intention to harm Stoick. Stoick then shot a semiautomatic rifle, an AR-15, at Scott and at a group of people fleeing the house, according to court documents. The shots missed Scott, but struck at least one individual, Sidney Cobb, named in the charging documents.

Later, at Union Hospital, Martin allegedly resisted and fought with police after claiming he intended to hurt Stoick. Police found him illegally in possession of a handgun.

Only Scott remained in the county jail Friday with bail set at $25,000 with 10 percent allowed.

Stoick and Martin both were released on bond Friday.
