Two Indiana State students injured in afternoon accident

TERRE HAUTE — Two Indiana State University students were hospitalized Thursday night after a head-on collision on U.S. 40 near Highland Lawn Cemetery, east of Terre Haute.

They were headed west in the highway’s far right lane when they changed lanes before crossing the double yellow lines into the path of a semitrailer about 5 p.m., according to Jeff Fisher, public information officer for the city Fire Department.

The driver was ejected from the vehicle and was lying on the ground unconscious when emergency personnel arrived.

He was taken to Union Hospital and then flown by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Fisher said.

The passenger was extricated from the vehicle but was conscious. He was taken to Union Hospital.

Fisher said the driver of the semi was not injured.

Officials don’t know what caused the Trans Am to move into the semi’s path.

Traffic was rerouted at U.S. 40 and Indiana 46 and at U.S. 40 and Blakely Avenue.

Names were not released by Thursday’s press time.
