St. Mary-of-the-Woods recognized as one of best colleges in Midwest

West Terre Haute — St. Mary-of-the-Woods College earned the 19th spot among the Best Baccalaureate Colleges-Midwest in the 2008 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report.

Among the 49 top-ranked Midwest colleges, SMWC also was recognized for having the highest percentage of classes of fewer than 20 students. Ninety-one percent of classes at SMWC have fewer than 20 students.

SMWC has been named among the Best in the Midwest in prior editions of “America’s Best Colleges,” but this is the first year that the College has received a ranking in the top 20.

“Rankings like this serve as an indicator, showing our progress as we work toward our strategic planning goals and our aspirations to make The Woods a place of national and international prominence,” said David G. Behrs, college president. “Our improved rankings really are a tribute to the excellent work of our board of trustees, faculty, staff and students. I am grateful for all their efforts to make St. Mary-of-the-Woods College distinctive.”

The U.S. News & World Report rankings — which this year feature some substantial changes in methodology — will be published in the magazine’s Aug. 27 issue, which will be on newsstands Monday.

The rankings, and a complete summary of the methodology used to rank each school, can be found online at www.usnews.com/colleges.
