Indiana Lt. Gov. candidate makes visit to Wabash Valley

Ellspermann says GOP ticket supports policies pushed by Daniels

TERRE HAUTE — The woman who hopes to become Indiana’s next Republican Lieutenant Governor, Sue Ellspermann, made a stop in Terre Haute Tuesday.

Ellspermann, 52, selected in May as the running mate of GOP gubernatorial nominee Mike Pence, visited Rose-Hulman, Rose-Hulman Ventures and attended a fundraiser while in the city.

During an interview at the Tribune-Star, Ellspermann said she supports the legislative agenda championed by outgoing Gov. Mitch Daniels, including right-to-work and the Daniels’ education reforms.

“All of those have been good changes,” Ellspermann said.

Looking to the future, if elected, Ellspermann said she and Pence have a full agenda that would build on the policies of Gov. Daniels and Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman. That agenda includes promoting expanded vocational and technical training of students, a moratorium on new state regulations, a reconsideration of how farm properties are assessed; and reducing the state’s income taxes by 10 percent over the next two years.

Ellspermann, who has a doctorate in industrial engineering, is new to state politics, winning her current Indiana House seat in 2010 in a close race over a  Democratic incumbent, Russell Stilwell.

In the November general election, Ellspermann and Pence will face Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg and his running mate, Vi Simpson, the Indiana Senate Minority Leader. They will also face Libertarian candidate Rupert Boneham and his running mate, Brad Klopfenstein.

Ellspermann, a native of Ferdinand in southern Indiana, said she would be an advocate for rural Hoosiers if she takes office as lieutenant governor. As an engineer and owner of her own consulting firm, the candidate also said she would like to encourage young people, especially young women, to pursue math, science and engineering in school.

“This really is a job interview for Mike and me,” Ellspermann said of the campaign, which will end when voters go to the polls Nov. 6. Coming from the traditionally Democratic region of southern Indiana, Ellspermann said she believes it is important in government that all voices be heard. She also said she and Pence “will run a very high-integrity race.”

When asked whether she was surprised, as a freshman member of the General Assembly, when she was told she was among those being considered to join Pence as his running mate, Ellspermann said she definitely was.

“I was very surprised,” she said. “I Googled the person who had called me [from the Pence campaign] to make sure it was legitimate.”
