Crockett wins to take over Vigo clerk’s office

TERRE HAUTE — In the Vigo County clerk’s race, Democrat Dave Crockett defeated Republican Mike Morris by a vote of 21,025 to 16,857.

The election signifies a new era in the clerk’s office. For the past 24 years, Pat Mansard or her late husband, Bill, have held the position of county clerk.

Crockett, 57, currently the county treasurer, cannot run for that office again because of term limits.

“I’m tickled to death and very proud voters made that choice,” Crockett said in a telephone interview from the Laborers International office at 401 Poplar St., where Democrats had gathered. “I want to thank those who supported me and those who worked for me.”

Mansard has done a great job, he said. “There are some big shoes to fill,” Crockett said.

When he takes office in January, he hopes to look at ways to make the office more efficient.

“I want to meet with judges and work with them to try to do something to reduce the volume of paperwork,” he said. He’d like to see more records digitally stored.

He also hopes to explore options to reduce the cost of elections by reducing the number of voting sites. He previously said he supports the idea of voting centers, but “I have to see what the law says.”

Morris, 61, chief executive officer of Morris Trucking, congratulated Crockett “on a well-run campaign.”

Morris also thanked those who worked on his campaign. “This certainly has been a good campaign for me,” Morris said in a telephone interview. “It was a pleasure to run.”

Crockett, previously a deputy sheriff for 21 years, said he did process service for five years serving summonses, orders, judgments and evictions, which are documents filed daily in the clerk’s office.
