Veterans Day parade will take place Sunday, Nov. 11

ISU ceremony will be on Monday

TERRE HAUTE — With Veterans Day on a Sunday this year, ceremonies honoring those who served will march on through the weekend.

Clifford Stephens, commander of the Vigo County Veterans Council, said this year’s Veterans Day parade will kick off at 10:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, moving down Wabash Avenue from Fourth to 12th streets, and up to VFW Post 972 at 12th and Mulberry streets.

“Rain or shine,” he said, explaining the Veterans Day parade occurs on the 11th day of the 11th month and that tradition will be upheld.

And at 11 a.m., the council will host a memorial service at the VFW with Mayor Duke Bennett and Terre Haute Chief of Police John Plasse to serve as guest speakers.

In addition to a surprise announcement concerning local veterans, Stephens said food and fellowship will be offered inside.

“Let’s pay our respects to those who served, plus those who paid the ultimate price,” he said.

At 11 a.m. Monday, Indiana State University will host a wreath-laying ceremony conducted by President Daniel Bradley outside Cunningham Memorial Library.

Friday afternoon, Ivy Tech Community College-Wabash Valley will host its third annual Veterans Day program beginning at 2 p.m. in Oakley Auditorium. According to information provided by the school, the campus serves more than 200 veterans.

Speaking will be Mary Quinteros Tallouzi of the Wounded Warriors Project, who will share her experience caring for her son Daniel, who was wounded in Iraq in 2006 while serving in the U.S. Army. He passed away in 2009, and their story has been chronicled in the book “Pediatrician Soldier.”

The program is free and open to the general public.

Gary Busiere, Ivy Tech Veteran Support Coordinator and a veteran himself, stated in a media release that the program is beneficial to everyone.

“To the student veteran, it is a valued time of recognition and appreciation for service to their country. For the traditional college student, it is a time to gain an understanding and realization of the sacrifices and hardships veterans have endured in the protection of their country,” he stated.
