Election board removes two from primary ballot

Candidacy challenged by two GOP voters

TERRE HAUTE — Two candidates have been removed from the May primary election ballot after the Vigo County Election Board on Tuesday ruled them ineligible under rules of the county’s Republican Party.

Lee M. Barrett, 24, and Richard M. Snow, 45, were each removed from the ballot by the board.

Barrett, who filed as a Republican candidate as a state party convention delegate, last voted in a primary election in 2008, casting a Democratic ballot, according to the Vigo County Voter Registration office.

Snow, who filed as a Republican candidate as a state party convention delegate and precinct committeeman for precinct 8F, also last voted in 2008, casting a Democratic ballot, according to the Voter Registration office.

The Republican Party Rule 2-3, which relates to precinct committee candidates, and party Rule 9-7, which relates to party convention candidates, each states that a candidate must be “in good standing in the Vigo County Republican Party and must have cast a Republican ballot in the most recent primary election in which the individual voted.”

Barrett’s candidacy was challenged by Janet C. Jenkins, a Republican voter, while Snow’s candidacy was challenged by Pamela A. Gentry, also a Republican voter.

Joseph Vanderhulst, the Republican member of the Election Board, moved that both be stricken from the ballot as they did not follow party rules. The board unanimously voted to remove the candidates.

Snow and Barrett each said they planned to join the GOP, but said they were not aware of the party requirements until after they had filed. They also were not aware of a deadline to withdraw their candidacies, requiring the board to take action.

Bill Treadway, chairman of the Vigo County Republican Party, said it was important to address the candidates “as primaries are party elections. To maintain the integrity of the ballot, you need to have Democrats running on the Democrat[ic] ballot and Republicans on the Republican ballot,” Treadway said after the board meeting.
