Pink Floyd tribute band to rock every brick in the walls of venerable theater

TERRE HAUTE — The classical downtown Terre Haute venue of the Indiana Theatre will soon be filled with the classic, psychedelic rock music of Pink Floyd.

Echoes of Pompeii, a Chicago-area tribute band to the legendary British group, is scheduled to perform at the Indiana on March 24.

The band played to an audience of more than 500 last year at Terre Haute’s Scottish Rite Lodge, the former Hippodrome vaudeville theater, which was built in 1915. Now, the group is looking forward to playing  another historic location, the 1,600-seat Indiana, which was constructed in 1922.

“That’s what we’re looking for,” said Jeremy Andrews, bass guitar player and manager for Echoes of Pompeii. The band seeks out historic venues for the unique experience they provide to performers and audiences, he said.

“We get to check out all of these old theaters,” he said. “It’s awesome.”

The performance at the Indiana Theatre, like all Echoes performances, will feature a laser light and light show. Some of the most popular Pink Floyd songs the band performs are “Comfortably Numb,” “Money,” and “Another Brick in the Wall,” Andrews said.

Echoes of Pompeii got its name from a Pink Floyd concern in which they played one of their most epic songs, “Echoes,” in the famous Pompeii coliseum in Italy in the late 1960s, Andrews said.

The Indiana Theatre has been operating downtown since opening in 1922 with the silent film “Cappy Ricks.” The 54-foot stage has been home to vaudeville acts, operettas and big bands. The theater has one of the largest indoor movie screens in Indiana.

Echoes of Pompeii plays mostly in the Midwest, but has performed at the famous Whisky A Go-Go club in Los Angeles. After its date at the Indiana, the eight-member band will play March 31 at the historic Crump Theater in Columbus and then April 21 at the Arcada Theater in St. Charles, Ill.

“It’s such a great feeling to be on stage in such a great setting,” Andrews said. “I’m excited to be there.”

Echoes of Pompeii play all genres of Pink Floyd music from 1968 to 1995, Andrews said. The band’s performances also feature the type of stage props for which Pink Floyd was known.

“We really dress up the stage,” he said.
