Men jailed, held on battery charges

TERRE HAUTE — Golf clubs and a folding knife were allegedly the weapons of choice for two men who now face criminal charges after a Friday night fight at a location on Chaffee Road in southwestern Vigo County.

Robert J. Ellinger, 25, of Terre Haute, and Andrew N. Keller, 25, of Shelburn, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Monday for a hearing, and will return to court Thursday for a hearing on formal criminal charges.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reports that police were called to the scene of a fight at about 11:44 p.m. Witnesses reported that Keller and two other men were inside a pickup truck, trying to leave the area, when Ellinger and others allegedly began striking the windshield and passenger window of the truck with golf clubs. Police report that Keller exited the truck to stop the damage, when he was hit with the golf clubs, sustaining cuts to his face, thumb and arms.

Keller allegedly pulled out a folding knife and stabbed Ellinger and another man. Ellinger reportedly had puncture wounds to his upper left abdomen and his right wrist. Both men were taken to Terre Haute Regional Hospital for treatment.

Police report that Keller’s injuries required 11 stitches, while Ellinger received 39 stitches to various wounds.

Ellinger and Keller both were arrested for battery.

The men are being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $15,000 each, no 10 percent allowed.
