TERRE HAUTE —
A February trial date has been set for a Terre Haute man charged with killing his wife earlier this week.
Robert E. Spitler II, 56, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 3 on Thursday where Judge Pro Tempore Stephen Leedy formalized the charge of murder and set the trial date for Feb. 26, along with a pre-trial conference date of Feb. 4.
Attorney Deborah Shepler was appointed as Spitler’s public defender. He remains held in the Vigo County Jail without bond.
Spitler was arrested late Monday after, police said, he called 911 to report that he had stabbed and killed his wife. When officers arrived at the home in the 4400 block of South Eighth Street, they entered the home and found Shawn Singhurse Spitler, 50, in a bedroom. An autopsy determined she died of multiple stab wounds to the chest.
