Suspect jailed after fatal Sullivan County bar fight

SULLIVAN — The suspect in a bar fight that ended in a death surrendered to police this morning in Sullivan.

James B. Gardner, 24, of Elnora surrendered to Indiana State Police at 9 a.m. today at the Sullivan County Sheriff’s office. A warrant had been issued for Gardner’s arrest Friday, but he had eluded police in recent days.

Gardner is alleged to have punched Richard D. Pigg, 51, of Dugger, on the side of the face causing Pigg to fall and strike his head on the floor of the Uptown Tavern in Dugger. Pigg was taken to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy showed he died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Gardner is facing one count of involuntary manslaughter, a class-C felony and is being held on a $15,000 bond, no 10 percent allowed, in the Sullivan County Jail.

Gardner’s initial court appearance is tentatively set for 10 a.m. Friday in Sullivan Superior Court.
