NEW: Police seek public’s help to solve 1980 homicide

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Sheriff investigators are asking for the community’s help in solving a homicide that occurred 29 years ago this week, states Deputy Chief Greg T. Ewing in today’s Crime Stoppers release.

On July 12, 1980, the body of 29-year-old Gloria Hedden of West Terre Haute was found by fishermen in the Wabash River near the U.S. Penitentiary. She had been dead three to five days. Her hands and feet were bound with a cable and her body had been weighted down with railroad iron.

Hedden worked for the U.S. Postal Service at the 13th Street annex; she also was taking classes at Indiana State University.

According to reports, Hedden’s vehicle was discovered on the ISU campus after her disappearance.

Gloria Hedden was survived by two children.

Ewing asks that anyone with information that could help police solve this case call the tip line at (812) 238-STOP or report online at wvcrimestoppers.org.

All tips to Crime Stoppers are anonymous, the release states, and someone could receive up to $1,000 if their tip leads to an arrest.
