GREENCASTLE, Ind. —
A central Indiana physician has been sentenced to four years in prison for excessively prescribing narcotics, which authorities said were sometimes exchanged for sexual encounters with female patients.
A Putnam County judge rejected arguments from 58-year-old Ray Howell’s attorney that the Roachdale doctor had become burdened by obsessions and a lack of social judgment in recent years because of a degenerative form of dementia.
Howell pleaded guilty in June to five charges related to illegal distribution of pain medications.
The Banner Graphic reports Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter said during Monday’s court hearing that one of Howell’s patients died in 2010 after overdosing on methadone, oxycodone and Xanax.
State officials suspended Howell’s medical license after his October arrest and he is prohibited from practicing medicine again.
