Bloomington to use lake, pool water to help with drought

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — The city of Bloomington is taking some unusual steps to make the most of the water it has in the midst of the drought.

The Herald-Times reports the southern Indiana city’s parks and recreation department will use water from Griffy Lake to fill pumper trucks that can hold 350 to 800 gallons of water to water landscaping, flower beds and young trees. The city already planned to drain Griffy Lake to make repairs on a dam.

Parks Director Mick Renneisen says the department will use water from two city pools for the same purpose when they close. He says the two pools holds about 600,000 gallons of water.

Mayor Mark Kruzan has enacted mandatory water use restrictions for Bloomington Utilities customers effective today.
