Linton man taken from home after 7-hour event

Linton — A Greene County man was taken into police custody Friday after a more-than seven-hour standoff at a home on Third Street SE in Linton and was in the Greene County Jail by that evening.

Ian Long, 38, of Linton, was arrested on a Greene County warrant for intimidation, and according to personnel at the jail was being held with bail set at $225,000, no 10 percent allowed.

No one was hurt in the standoff, which began in the early morning hours of Friday after Linton police were called to a home to investigate a person who was allegedly involved in a reported knife fight in downtown Linton. During that reported fight, it was alleged that two people suffered knife and other wounds, according to the Indiana State Police.

When police arrived at his home, Long refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside his home with his three children — ages 10, 12 and 14, the state police reported.

Shortly after 6 a.m., Long sent his 10-year-old son out of the home with a two-way radio to communicate with officers. Police did not allow the child to return to the home.

“Police officers were able to grab the 10-year-old boy when he came out with the two-way radio,” said Sgt. Curt Durnil of the Indiana State Police in Bloomington. “Of course, we were not going to let him go back inside.”

The Long home sits on a quiet street near the Linton water tower. The white, one-and-a-half story home has a well-tended yard and a brick front porch facing the street. An American flag was flying upside down on the front porch near the entrance to the home. An upside down flag is a widely recognized sign of distress.

Between 7 and 8 a.m., while negotiations were taking place, officers heard two shots fired within the house. It was not immediately clear why the shots were fired or where any bullets may have traveled.

“There were shots fired inside the house,” Durnil said. “But, at the time, officers didn’t know where those bullets were placed. They didn’t feel like they were being fired at, so, of course, they didn’t return any fire into the home.”

Crime scene investigators appeared to be examining what may have been a bullet hole in a home directly across the street from Long’s house after the incident had ended a few hours later. The window on the storm door at the front of the Long home was also broken.

Before the standoff ended, the two older children left the residence without incident. None of the three children was hurt in the incident, Durnil said.

Police continued to negotiate with Long until just after 1 p.m. when ISP emergency response officers entered the home after Long had fallen asleep, according to police. Long was taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after 1 p.m., an ambulance sped away from the scene accompanied by several police vehicles. Police would not comment on where Long was initially taken, because of privacy concerns.

Long had not been booked into the Greene County jail as of 6 p.m. Friday.

After Long was taken into custody, officers removed one firearm from the residence. That firearm will remain in police custody by court order, the ISP stated.

During the negotiations, a state police bomb squad robot was used to deliver a “piece of paper” to Long, Durnil said. It was not known whether the robot actually entered the home, he said.

During the standoff, which took place just a couple of blocks south of the town’s main street, at least 20 Indiana State Police vehicles were parked near Long’s home. Indiana State Police SWAT members were at the scene along with the Linton Police Department, Greene County Sheriff’s Department and Bloomfield Police Department. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security was also there providing support for officers and a radio command center, Durnil said.

Durnil said cooperation between the police organizations was outstanding.

“The way that the agencies worked together today … it just ended in a way that we couldn’t have asked for anything better.”

At the end of the standoff, law enforcement officers were visibly relieved by the outcome.

“For no officers to get hurt, no kids to get hurt and the suspect as well to walk away unscathed from the situation, we couldn’t ask for anything better,” Durnil said. “We’re hopeful that nothing like this ever happens again, but, obviously, if it does, we want it to end like this.”
