Jasonville —
Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels roared through the Wabash Valley on Friday on a Harley Davidson motorcycle followed by approximately 800 motorcycle riders from around the state.
Daniels rolled into Shakamak State Park for a lunch break about noon Friday followed by a line of bikes stretching for more than a mile and taking more than 30 minutes to pass the park entrance.
This is the last time Daniels will lead the annual ABATE of Indiana “Ride with the Governor,” an event that raises money for the Indiana National Guard.
Daniels’ annual ride began at 10 a.m. at the Statehouse in Indianapolis. It was scheduled to end Friday afternoon in French Lick.
Before boarding his bike, Daniels called for greater motorcycle riding education, noting a slight increase in the past year in motorcycle accidents. He attributed that to self-trained motorcyclists and said “nobody should be jumping on a bike without having somebody teach them first.”
ABATE of Indiana promotes motorcycle safety and also trains people to ride.
Daniels thanked his fellow riders for their donations to the Indiana National Guard. Indiana Adjutant General Martin Umbarger said the annual rides have raised about $30,000 for National Guard families.
