TERRE HAUTE — A southside home sustained extensive damage in a kitchen fire Wednesday morning.
Honey Creek Township firefighters were dispatched to 4260 S. Seventh St. at 8:49 a.m. after an occupant of the home awoke to a kitchen fire.
Battalion chief Josh Sittler said heavy smoke and fire was showing when firefighters arrived minutes later. They determined the cause to be an accidental cooking fire. The flames spread to a living room, with heavy heat and smoke damage throughout the two-story home, Sittler said.
Two adults and two children resided in the single-family dwelling, he said, but only one one man was at home at the time of the fire. He was awakened by a smoke detector alarm and safely exited the home.
The American Red Cross is assisting the family, Sittler said.
Fifteen firefighters responded to the scene, along with personnel from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and TransCare.
