Donning pink socks on Monday, Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett issued a challenge to mayors and business leaders in 10 other counties to also put on the bright-colored footwear and donate funds in support of the 16th Annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Wabash Valley.
The challenge is to wear the socks on Sept. 28, a day before the race, which this year will be at Indiana State University’s Memorial Stadium.
“The challenge is designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and to participate this year,” Bennett said. “This is something close to me as my wife is a two-time survivor of breast cancer.
“Anytime anyone gets a cancer diagnosis, it is a significant change in your life and your whole focus is to fight it. Fortunately my wife found it early,” the mayor said.
One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and early diagnosis is one of the keys to battling breast cancer, said Lorrie Heber, 2012 chair of the Race for the Cure.
Bennett plans to mail out at least 100 letters, each containing a pair of pink socks, challenging Wabash Valley mayors and business leaders to wear the socks. The letters will go to the Wabash Valley chapter’s service area — Vigo, Clay, Parke, Vermillion, Sullivan , Greene, Owen, Putnam and Monroe counties in Indiana and Clark and Edgar counties in Illinois.
“This is something new, a new twist as a way to expand to get more people involved and raise more” funds, Bennett said of the pink sock challenge. Race for the Cure pink socks are also available at all Kroger stores, which is a main sponsor of the event.
Heber said the goal this year is to raise $40,000 from donations. The race, which is the largest fundraiser of the Wabash Valley affiliate, will generate about $100,000, Heber said. Of the funds raised, 75 percent will go for mammograms and breast cancer screenings for women and men of low income. The remaining 25 percent goes to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for research grants.
This year the goal is to have 3,000 runners registered for the race, which includes a 3.1-mile course and a 1-mile walk/run around the Indiana Veterans Memorial Mile around ISU’s Memorial Stadium. Last year the event attracted 2,400 participants.
Participants will end the race and walk by crossing at the 50-yard marker at Memorial Stadium, with participants shown on the stadium’s large display screen. The event will also feature a “team village” at Memorial Stadium, merchandise sales and silent auction.
Heber said participants can also “sleep in for the cure” by paying a registration fee, which entitles them to a race T-shirt “and just sleep in on race day.”
The race is $20 for adults and $10 for students and active military. An additional $5 fee is charged for participants wanting their race timed.
