TERRE HAUTE —
A Terre Haute woman died of smoke inhalation from a Sunday morning apartment fire.
An autopsy conducted this morning revealed the cause of death of Rosalie Trimmer, 71, who was the sole occupant of the apartment, located on Honey Creek Street just off Carlisle Street in southern Vigo County.
Battalion Chief Josh Sittler of the Honey Creek Fire Department said Trimmer was found in a hallway area of her apartment. The fire was contained to a living room/kitchen area, he said, and the cause of the fire appears to be clothing that was against a permanent heater in the apartment. The fire has been ruled accidental.
Sittler also stated that the smoke detector inside the apartment did not have a battery, and was not operational.
The fire was reported around 10:45 a.m.
Neighbors in adjacent apartments reportedly alerted others in the area about the fire, and some tried to alert Trimmer as well.
