TERRE HAUTE —
An update on road and weather conditions from Sergeant Joe Watts, Public Information Officer/Recruiter of Indiana State Police District 53 includes the following.
The morning commute has relatively been a quiet one. Troopers are currently working a “jackknifed” tractor trailer on SR 63 near CR 600N in northern Vermillion County. No injuries, but the northbound traffic is slow in that area. No other parts of the district are experiencing problems at this time. The Putnamville District is comprised of Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Clay, Vigo, and Vermillion counties.
Travel on Interstate 70 is operating smoothly at this time.
The majority of the U.S. and state roads in the district are experiencing scattered slick spots to totally ice covered. The majority of the totally ice covered roadways are north of I-70 with the strongest concentration of icy roadways north of U.S. 36 in Parke/Vermillion counties. Secondary roads in the district are slick/hazardous.
Last evening, approximately 8 p.m to midnight, troopers responded to two crashes and three slide-offs on Interstate 70, all in Putnam County. No injuries reported.
With the worst supposedly yet to come, motorist are encouraged to travel only when necessary, slow down and drive for conditions, allow extra time, use caution, do not follow too closely, and have their vehicle well prepared (gas, windows clean, cell phone, emergency food/clothing). If motorists are traveling too fast for conditions, troopers will be issuing traffic citations. The citations are meant to change driving behaviors to reduce crashes and save lives, not to simply write a ticket.
District troopers will be working around the clock to assist the public. Regular days off have been cancelled during this approaching storm.
We need to leave our phone lines open for emergency calls. Motorists can access road and weather information by visiting INDOT’s web siteTrafficWise.IN.gov or dial 800-261-ROAD (7623).
Another excellent source for the public and media to check on county snow emergency declarations is the Indiana Department of Homeland Security web site which is frequently updated: www.in.gov/dhs/files/travel-advisory-map/
