LIZ CIANCONE: No pet costumes for this Halloween
Ed and I were old enough to know better, but we got our laughs in a rather cruel way. We caused Lady, the family collie, a lot of chagrin by dressing her up in “people clothes.”
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Wish lists don’t seem to get any shorter
I don’t really have a “bucket list.” I’m not sure what that is. I do, however, have a wish list of places I’d like to go, and things I’d like to do and stuff I’d like to see.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Mom’s theories worked best when all senses were used
I once read a book which offered theories about how to raise a child.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Will this election season ever end?
I recall a time some years ago when Dad’s uncle, aunt and cousin came to visit us in Yorkville. Topping Uncle Ed’s “bucket list” was to attend a live radio broadcast of the “National Barn Dance” which originated in Chicago.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Summer cold may last until autumn
I have been trying to think of something more miserable than a summer cold. I’m not having any luck with that, maybe because I’ve been wheezing for something like three weeks now.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Let's hope pupils still long for school days
If this were the day after Labor Day — and it is — and if I spotted you a few decades — and I will — you would find me primed and eager to begin a new school year. I only wish!
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Maybe we should give ‘overseers’ a test, too
I never cease to be amazed and amused by the efforts put forth in an effort to see our kids get a good basic education.
-
Liz Ciancone: Fascination with Amelia Earhart still strong
I’ve always admired Amelia Earhart. I liked her haircut and admired that she lived her life on her own terms. Like the rest of the world, I’ve wondered whatever happened to her.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Egg-xperiment made the news on a hot day
Now that temperatures have moderated to the point that I can draw a deep breath without feeling faint, I've been looking back at other heat waves I have survived.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: It was just JoJo’s time to go — really!
It has been years, but I don’t think I’ve been able to fully convince my Best Friend that he did not kill Mom’s canary.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: There’s always something new on road of life
I was asked the other day about when I learned to drive. The short answer is that it was later than most.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: The true meaning of love … really!
I got so hot and tired and bored the other day that I actually turned on the television set in the middle of the day.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Chuckles from news of way back when
Way back when I worked on my college newspaper, the staff, me included, kept on the lookout for what we called “fillers.” A filler was a brief bit of fun or fact, or sometimes both. When the story ran out before the column was filled, we could plug in one of these tidbits to fill the space.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: There were no cooling centers in 1936
Mother Nature hasn’t been acting very maternal. In fact, she more closely resembles Cinderella’s stepmother. I’m about ready to throw in the white flag. I don’t do heat and she, apparently, doesn’t do either cool or rain.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Wash day sent many folks through the wringer
It’s always nice to find that someone reads the stuff I write. But, I had no idea that so many friends and acquaintances had experienced Monday as wash day until I began to get feedback on my laundry column.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Memories sparked by find of old letters
My Best Friend had a pleasant surprise the other day. Forwarded from the Tribune-Star was an e-mail from the granddaughter of one of his special friends. Marvin Eilts had served with my BF in the Aviation Cadet Program during “the big war.”
-
MS. TAKES: Wash day actually lasted an entire day
Hot weather keeps the washing machine whirling, almost daily. I thought the other day about how only Monday once was wash day and what a production it was.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Reflecting on the many songs of war
Memorial Day was once dedicated to remembering personal ancestors. It has become a spring version of Veterans Day which, in turn, was once known as “Armistice Day” before nearly constant wars turned it into a memorial for all military veterans.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Hot or cold, food needs to be right temp
Every now and then someone opens a conversation with me by saying, “Why don’t you write about …?”
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Avoiding the heat no puzzle to Indy the dog
When it gets this hot, I’m with my eldest granddog, Indy. We both look for a room with a ceiling fan. She also demands that the room have a tile floor to cool both bottom and top. She has the floor of course, but there is a cool corner for me in a comfortable chair and a small table for my ice water.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: She wasn’t hooked by the fishing hobby
I’m told that eveyone should have a hobby. If “hobby” means collecting something like stamps or coins, I don’t have one.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Many happy thoughts to go around on Mothers’ Day
I know this is going to sound goofy, but Mothers’ Day never passes that I don’t think of my Uncle Jim.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Drive down memory lane with vintage cars
I got to the sports center the other morning and found Ben, Diane and Ron in a serious discussion about cars — vintage cars.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: What to make of that mild winter
I’m old enough to have seen some interesting fluctuations in weather, but this year has taken the gold-plated trophy.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Eating and dining can have their own rhythm
I put down my fork after supper the other evening and remembered our family suppers when I was a kid.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Holidays don't mean what they used to
It’s funny how your perspective on holidays changes as you grow older. I thought of that the other morning as we are about to start the countdown to Memorial Day.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Who do we think we're foolin' over time dance?
It seems like only yesterday we’d head for the Family Sports Center at an early hour. The sky in the east was a lighter shade of gray. We could see kids waiting for the school bus a block or more ahead. By the time we got to Hulman Field, there was actually a bit of pink in the sky.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Pastor Pat may want to re-read his Bible
I’ve done my share of Monday-morning quarterbacking. I guess most of us don’t take Sunday losses well. We seem to figure that if only we were coaching, our team would have won the game.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Cubs fans never give up hope for a winner
Ho hum! Another spring, another nail-biter for Cubs fans.
-
LIZ CIANCONE: Earliest memories of time and place
Over lunch the other day, my Best Friend and I were discussing our earliest memories. Neither of us could actually attach an age to our earliest. He informed me that while you could remember incidents, you must develop what he called “cognitive awareness” before you could associate the memory with a specific age.
