Franklin school helping the USO

Benjamin Franklin Elementary staff believes it is important to teach the academics, as well as, learning the importance of working in and giving back to the community and country. Benjamin Franklin Elementary Falcons are choosing to be strong, to be selfless and truthful, to be respectful to self and others, to be obedient, to be a noble role model and to set and work on goals.

Within this spirit, we will be honoring those who are currently serving our country in the armed services by raising funds for the USO (United Service Organization). The USO is a private, nonprofit organization that provides morale and recreational services to members of the military. Since 1941, it has worked in partnership with the Department of Defense and has provided support and entertainment to U.S. Armed Forces, relying heavily on private contributions and on funds, goods, and services from Department of Defense. It is dedicated to lifting the spirits and honoring those who serve.

On Nov. 10 (Saturday), students, parents, and staff members will set up a “coffee stand” for community members to drive up and get a cup of “Joe” for the USO. Starbucks has graciously donated the coffee for this event. In addition, hot chocolate and baked goods will be available at the “drive-in” coffee stand. All items will be sold for one dollar. The proceeds from this event will go toward the USO. Franklin Family would like to invite the community to enter the half circle drive at 16th and Elm to get a cup of coffee from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. A Franklin Family member will be ready to serve you and take your donations for the USO. Please exit to the left and head south to avoid congestion on 16th Street.

We hope to make a sizable donation to USO. The USO is currently seeking funds for care packages that could include: lip balm, eye drops, and phone cards for service members to make calls home for the holidays.

Our service men and women are making remarkable sacrifices for our country around the world. The Terre Haute community and its future citizens should be committed to bringing a touch of home to the troops whenever possible. Please join Benjamin Franklin Elementary on Nov. 10 and have a cup of “Joe” for the USO.

As the principal, I am grateful for the students’ family members, Starbucks and all of the Terre Haute community who generously give of their time and/or their products. Finally, I could not be more proud of the Falcon students and teachers. Together, they work diligently, daily to be a noble role model while setting and working on goals.

Hope to see you at 16th and Elm on between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m.

— Tina Horrall
