Know what is going on in your neighborhood

It could happen to you.

Many times lately, I have seen articles in the editorial section about people who are angry about personal items being stolen from their house or car. So be aware, this could happen to you. Take precautions, like not leaving valuables in cars, locking all doors and windows in your house and, most of all, be aware of what is going on around your neighborhood.

You can do this every day by going on a Web site called www.b-aware.us and signing up for a free service. Just click on sign-up and check it every day. You will be surprised what goes on in your area.

Remember the holidays are real bad times. Protect yourself and sign up today. What do you have to lose?

Again the site is www.b-aware.us.

Thank you for great turnout for veterans

I am writing this letter to thank the local community for the large turnout for the Annual Veterans Day Parade or in the case of this year, procession.

I was pleased to see the outpouring of support for fallen hero, Sgt. Dale Griffin. The route down Wabash Avenue was lined wall to wall on both sides of the street. I have been marching in this annual event for several years and by far this was the largest turnout I have ever seen. Normally you will see a couple of hundred spectators turn out for the event but this year’s turnout was in the thousands.

Thank you all for being there to not only honor Sgt. Griffin but all of the veterans both past and present.

I hope the community continues to support all veterans year-round, and I hope to see all of you next year on Nov. 11.

Harrop on the money; hijinks in Clay County

Finally, on Oct. 25, Froma Harrop wrote a column that actually made some sense when she talked about Social Security.

At the end of her column she said, “You know what children want or what children with paint want to do with a clean sheet of paper? They want to mess it up.”

She said Social Security is a clean program. Let’s keep it that way.

At least she proved she’s more than just another pretty face, which is more than I can say for Diana West or Susan Estrich.

By the way I stand corrected on another columnist name, I gave the late Molly Ivins name as Molly Givens, sorry about that.

Now I got two more subjects to talk about, then I’m done.

Remember when some towns had more than just one newspaper?

It’s too bad they still don’t have, because at least you wouldn’t have to depend on one newspaper for the news, sports, want ads, funnies, business ads, and even letters to the editor, or even garage or yard sales.

I know Terre Haute once had two daily newspapers and one weekly called the Saturday Evening Spectator, and Indy had at least two dailies. Brazil had another one besides The Times; it had one before The Times called The Brazil Gazette, which was taken over by a former radio announcer who evidently didn’t know beans about how to run it, which is the reason for its demise. And then there was the Clay County Journal which evidently couldn’t get enough sponsors.

Oh, they had a few that had to pay to run their ads in it, but they offered individuals free yard sale ads which must of been their downfall.

Then you got this so-called certain group of small business people who claim to entice new business to the community and try to encourage old ones to stay, but when it came to this particular newspaper they didn’t seem to care and a former mayor who could also care less when it went out.

I asked this same group of small business people if they knew why it went out and what happened to the people that ran it?

They wouldn’t even answer. I think, although I can’t prove it, that they helped put it out, they couldn’t stand to see another paper make it in Brazil, especially the free yard sale ads.

Isn’t it a coincidence that one of the small business group members also happens to be an employee of the town’s only remaining newspaper which is corporate owned? The Journal was independent.

Last but not least, I was asked why I put down our state’s Guv? They also asked if I ever have anything good to say about Mr. Mitch? The answer is no, as long as Mr. Major Moves is in office I never will. I’ll just be glad when he’s out of office for good, I hope.

Till next time, take care and be fair.
