Photo captured boy’s respect for fallen soldier

Thanks you for your excellent coverage on fallen hero Sgt. Dale Griffin. My prayers and thoughts are with his family and friends. I felt compelled to comment on the photo featured on the front page on Nov. 10 of the children of the Maplewood Christian School. Whoever the young man is who has his hand on his heart is certainly being taught the importance of showing respect, even at his young age. This simple act caught in this photo touched the hearts of many … how proud his family must be of him!

Contacting elected representative rather difficult

An open letter to Congressman Ellsworth:

Dear sir:

Prior to the floor vote on the alleged health care bill considered by the House of Representatives, I attempted to contact your office to let you know my family’s and my opinion of this piece of legislation. I called the number listed on your own Web site for the Terre Haute office. It rang and rang, despite numerous calls over the course of three days.

After the lock-step vote on Saturday, I attempted to send you an e-mail to the e-mail address listed on your Web site. After filling out the entire form, and giving you my opinion in the space provided, I clicked on “SEND,” only to be given a message on my computer screen that you were not accepting e-mails at this time. Finally on Monday, Nov. 9, I tried one more time to contact your Terre Haute office by telephone, only to hear it ring a counted 22 times, with no answer.

Mr. Ellsworth, I suggest you try and remember what your title is: representative. Which means you’re one notch below pond scum. We all were promised “change,” and that change was also to be “the most open and transparent government in the history of the USA.” Your interpretation of this “change” makes Pol Pot, Stalin, Mao and Hitler look benevolent by comparison.

At one time you were a law enforcement officer. I pray you were better at it than you’ve been a member of Congress, and that you will return to that line of work quickly. I know my family and I will do our very best to help return you to your former line of work.

Patriot Brigade finished sixth in Midstates event

This past weekend, the Terre Haute North Marching Band, also known as the “Patriot Brigade” made its way to Mason, Ohio, for the annual Midstates Band Association Circuit Championships.

Qualifying as a Top 10 finalist in class AAAA, the band competed in the finals and placed sixth overall — the highest placement in the band’s history as a finalist. The band also took third in visual and the color guard placed third overall. This is the third year in a row that the band has qualified as an MSBA finalist.

The band directors, Brooke Basso and Jeremy Basso, are extremely proud of this group and look forward to next year!
