I have been privileged to be part of an organization for the last 15 years that I feel can never get enough recognition. Vigo County School Corp.’s Performing Arts Workshop offers students the opportunity to hone their performing talents, whether they are actors, singers, dancers, orchestra members or tech people.
This year was no exception.
On July 1 and 2, more than 100 students presented “Beauty and the Beast” to what I hear were record crowds. While I am sure that those students have gotten heaps of praise, I so very much wanted the opportunity to applaud the students myself. Lots of people have asked me why, after moving to South Carolina two years ago, I continue to come back each summer to work with this program, and all I can tell them is that it is because I have yet to experience working with greater theater kids then those involved in PAW. Whether onstage, backstage or in the orchestra pit, PAW kids really are the best of the best. Thanks so much to all of them for their hard work for me this summer. This musical was not easy, but everyone did it with great professionalism.
Terre Haute has produced too many talented students to count, and nearly all of those students have come through the Performing Arts Workshop Program. I started choreographing students under Rex Magner for the production of “Oliver!” and count “Once Upon a Mattress” and “The Music Man” among my favorite shows and some of the best work of the program. There is no end to the benefits that students have when they participate, and I hope that everyone involved this year continues to be involved next year, and in years to come. PAW is a unique and wonderful program that I have not found duplicated in other states, and those in Terre Haute should be proud of what they are offering to their middle and high school students.
Congrats to all of you! See you next summer!

Hospice care comforted Dad during final days
Since November is National Home Care/Hospice Month, I would like to take this time to thank Hospice of the Wabash Valley, and particularly Carol Raetz, for the kindness and helpful assistance shown to my family and to my father, Robert Walsh Torrence, before he passed away on Sept. 25.
Since my father had endured numerous hospital stays, it was very important for him to be in his own home. The services provided by Hospice of the Wabash Valley enabled us to share precious and sacred moments with him that we could not have had otherwise.
We thank everyone who donated to Hospice in his name, and we are eternally grateful to all those who supported us through this difficult journey.

Newcomers Club planning celebration
I am writing to inform women about the Terre Haute Newcomers Club.
The club has been in Terre Haute for 70 years. We are planning a big celebration/birthday party for Newcomers in January, 2010. We are a group of women, ages mid 30s to 80s, and with many varied interests. We have many interest groups in the club, ranging from bunco, bridge, antiques, the Gadabouts, quilting, crafts, book club, Chatter and Stitch, Garden Club, Lunch Bunch and many others. If we don’t have the interest group you are interested in being a part of we can begin a new interest group.
We have about 160 members, but want to get new members in our club. We meet once a month for a business meeting on the first Wednesday of each month, and we have a speaker. The dues are very reasonable at $20 per year. The business meeting is held at a restaurant, and a meal is provided. The price of the meal varies by food served, and the restaurant at which the meeting is held.
The name of the club indicates that the members are all new persons to Terre Haute, but that isn’t the case. We have some of the members who have been members for 30-plus years. We would like to have new women to Terre Haute, and women who have been in Terre Haute for any period of time.
My name is Ann Speedy, and I am the current president of the Terre Haute Newcomers Club. I will be happy to have the membership chairperson contact you if you call me and let me know you are interested in attending a meeting as a prospective member. Please call me with your name and phone number. If I am not home please leave a message. My phone number is (812) 298-0172.
Thanks, I look forward to hearing from you.
