Workers should pay fair share

I would like to respond to the letter from Jim Kmetz. You wondered what I was talking about, so I’ll try to explain.

The reason I’m so against the right-to-work law is because we are expected to fall for the idea that we will be better off if we decide not to pay our union dues. We voted to be union, so we are represented by them and it only makes sense that people who benefit from it should pay their fair share. Even with union dues, we make more than nonunion counterparts. It’s worth it to have someone in your corner.

As an example of what can happen, take a look at the country of Greece. One of their major problems leading to bankruptcy was that it’s practically a national pastime for them to not pay their taxes. Doesn’t it make sense that the same thing would happen to the unions if people didn’t pay their dues?

The American colonists were against “taxation without representation.” Right-to-work would give us “representation without taxation” which would only lead to no representation. Are we expected to believe that this irresponsible practice would make us better off? If the government made a law that said we could opt out of paying taxes, plenty of people would fall for it but the only direction we would go is down.

I also have to disagree with your stereotype of union people as being lazy. Unions recognize the importance of making high-quality products. They support apprentice programs to make competent employees who can make profits for their companies.

Also, note that a new company is coming to our area with over 200 jobs for the old Pfizer property. It was done without selling out our workers with right-to-work.
