Disturbing news on state lottery

Perhaps you also read the AP article in our Tribune-Star (Nov. 5) which reported the state had given the management of the lottery to GTECH, a Rhode Island-based firm. What will the state “sell” next?

But what bothered me even more were the plans to expand lottery sales in low-income areas.

The  article reads: “While studies show that low-income people play the lottery in disproportionate numbers, the Indy Star reported Sunday that a disproportionate amount of lottery profits go to affluent counties because its revenue is targeted based on the value of motor vehicles in the county, not on where (lottery) tickets are purchased.”

If this is so, it reeks of “the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.” I don’t like it, do you?

Thank you. These are simple words and yet they convey a heart-felt expression of gratitude for a community that by its overwhelming response to our Pomeroy Pride Campaign has affirmed the ongoing mission of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

While the campaign’s goal is to build a sports and recreational facility on our campus, it represents so much more to The Woods. The Pomeroy Pride Campaign embodies our confidence in our unique mission and our determination to provide a high-quality student experience to future generations of Woods students.

The generosity of the Wabash Valley has accomplished far more than to move our campaign forward. We are both humbled and buoyed by the expression of your belief in us: belief that we will be good stewards, belief that we will provide educational opportunities for another 172 years, belief that we are an important economic catalyst for the Wabash Valley and belief that we will build this building.

And so sometimes when you are moved to a loss for words, the best ones are simple. Thank you so much.

A great night to be a Viking

This past Saturday, Nov. 3, West Vigo High School inducted its inaugural class into its Athletic Hall of Fame. The Jim Mann Greendome has never experienced such a night.

Representing the first class were Mr. John Kesler II, Mr. Bob Woolley, Ms. Lisa (Ridenour) White, Mrs. Amy (Vaira) Booker, Mr. Cory DeGroote, Mrs. Bridget (Miller) Short and Mr. Gabe Cook.

Hugs, laughs, smiles and tears ran rampant through the legendary gym with stories and memories going from friend to friend and player to coach well into the night.

Many thanks go to Excalibur Catering for an amazing meal, Front Porch Friends for the table decorations, and Mr. Gelb and the West Vigo strings for providing music to make the night even more memorable. Good news is we get to do it again next year.
