Volunteers needed for Pet Food Bank

Vigo County Animal Coalition is a non-profit umbrella organization that promotes the well-being of animals in Vigo County. We are comprised of representatives of Terre Haute Humane Society, Harmony Haven, Spay-Neuter League, Project HOPE, Terre Haute Code Enforcement/Animal Control, the community of West Terre Haute, as well as animal advocates and animal lovers.

We meet monthly at Vigo County Public Library on Poplar Street in Terre Haute the last Wednesday of the month starting at 5:30 p.m. Many animal issues and ideas are shared at these meetings. The public is encouraged to attend.

It is being discussed about creating a Pet Food Bank right here in Terre Haute, as they already have in Indianapolis and other cities. We understand there is a need for these pets to be fed during times of temporary hardship. The idea has been brought to the table, and now we are looking for volunteers who have the passion, time and devotion to the animals. These individuals would actually be the ones who will help to create and promote this concept from the ground floor up.

If you think that you would like to be involved in helping to bring our community pets to “A Level Above” please call (812) 232-SPAY or you can write us at P.O. Box 2132, Terre Haute, IN 47802.

We would love to meet and talk with you.

Optimists plan events for kids

Many in the community are aware of the local Optimist Clubs. The Optimist International motto is “Give of yourself for the kids.” Although many in the community are aware of the Clothe A Child, where many needy children get new clothes, there are several other sponsored activities.

This Sept. 11, the local Optimist Clubs are joining efforts to hold a basketball event for all boys and girls ages 8 through 13. There will be a Pass, Dribble, Shoot Tri Star basketball contest. This event is free for all children in the community.

The Optimist Clubs are grateful to the coaches and players of the Indiana State women’s basketball team who are helping in the organization of this activity. The players from the team will be available to interact with the children. We are also very thankful to Jimmy Smith and the staff of the Terre Haute Boys and Girls Club as they are lending us use of their courts and also have been extremely supportive of this event.

We also thank the Vigo County School Corp. who allowed participation forms to be available in the schools. Forms for participation are also available from the Boys and Girls Club.

All children who participate will receive a participation ribbon while the first- and second-place finishers in each age and gender category will receive trophies. The winners will move on to compete for the Indiana South District Optimist Championship to be held early in 2011.

There is no need to preregister, as registration will take place between 10 and 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at the Boys and Girls Club, 220 N. third St.
