Safety priorities show diligence

As a parent of a child at Lost Creek Elementary School, my primary concern is safety. Vigo County School Corp. has shown me this is their top priority as well, through their collaborative efforts with the City of Terre Haute and the Vigo County Sheriff Department.

It is with a grateful heart that I would like to thank Sheriff Greg Ewing, Chief John Plasse, the Vigo County Council, Mayor Bennett, Superintendent Tanoos, and the team of dedicated faculty and staff members at Lost Creek Elementary School for their diligence and efforts in keeping our school secure and our students safe.

As a parent volunteer I am able to witness firsthand the value of having an officer present during the school day. Among the many safety benefits in which they provide, it gives me a warm feeling to see Officer Larry Hopper having lunch with the students in the cafeteria. During this time, Officer Hopper is able to interact with young students and build a relationship of trust. This activity delivers the message to the students that law enforcement officials are real and approachable people.

It is my sincerest hope that having law enforcement representatives present at the school will continue and become a permanent effort to keep our children safe.

People need to have more input

Thirty some years ago, my sons belonged to Boys Club and youth football, Falcons and Blackcats to be exact. We had wonderful years through both programs. I’ll always be grateful to the numerous coaches that willingly “volunteered” time to take on these young boys. I was very active, as many parents, in these programs.

My problem? When VCSC gave the former Chauncey Rose school to the Boys Club, was there a public forum? No. OK, these youth needed a bigger and better building — and it’s a done deal.

Now the Boys Club wants/has taken over Vigo County Youth Football. Why? Where’s the public forum? I think the Boys Club has gotten too big for its britches — maybe they need some humble pie. VCYFB has always been run by parents and volunteers. In other words — by the people for the little people. Where’s our public forum?
