Support process at Hamilton Center
I was greatly encouraged to read that the Hamilton Center Board of Directors has chosen to proceed with the established recruiting process for the search of its new executive director. I also highly affirm them for not caving in to outside pressures to rush, or even abandon, the process.
I’ve known one of the candidates, Mr. Burks, for many years and know him to be a very loyal Hamilton Center executive who was highly respected and trusted by Galen Goode. But I also know, with my many years of health-care administration and not-for-profit board leadership experience, that an objective recruitment process for the senior leadership position protects everyone — including internal applicants like Mr. Burks. His years of good work within the organization speak well of him as a worthy candidate, but I encourage everyone to trust the board to gather the needed information and to make the best choice. That’s their job.
Outside pressure and favors are never helpful to a board in recruitment process mode, and will always be hurtful to the integrity of the process. Hold the course, Hamilton Center board members. Galen would have you do no less.

‘Far-left’ person sees the light
I get the feeling from his Jan. 3 letter that James Stephens didn’t like a letter I wrote on Dec. 28. A part of my letter questioned the credibility of the conservative magazine, The Weekly Standard. I cited some articles from Mediamatters.org that showed why I had doubts about The Weekly Standard.
Stephens didn’t say how I or Mediamatters.org got it wrong about The Weekly Standard. Instead, he responded by name-calling — saying I was “a far left person” and Mediamatters.org was a “radical, far-left website.”
Name-calling has convinced me of my mistakes. I’ll be converting from the (far left) dark side to the “right” side now. Thanks for helping me see the way.
