ISTEP-Plus tests are under way

The Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP) is being administered to all students across the state of Indiana this week. The ISTEP-Plus consists of two major components: the first part, the Applied Skills Assessment, includes essay and short answer questions and are being given March 1-10. The second part, which includes multiple choice questions, will be given April 26-May 5.
Both parts measure student’ mastery of the Indiana Academic Standards in English/Language Arts and mathematics at grades 3-8. Students will also be tested in science at grades 4 and 6 and social studies at grades 5 and 7. Every student tested will receive a comprehensive Student Report showing performance in terms of Pass+, Pass, or Did Not Pass.
Beginning with the Class of 2012, the new Graduation Qualifying Exam consists of two smaller tests that students take after completing courses in Algebra I and English 10. The ISTEP English 10 Graduation Examination consists of three item types: constructed-response, multiple-choice and writing. The ISTEP Algebra I Graduation Examination consists of four item types: constructed-response, gridded-response, multiple-choice and graphing. If needed, students may retake the English 10 and Algebra I exams.
Twenty-six states have graduation exams, and Indiana is one of these. Students need to earn a passing score on both of the ISTEP Graduation Examinations in order to earn a high school diploma in Indiana.
THIS week is the beginning of the ISTEP-Plus for students in grades 3-8. Thank you for helping us emphasize the importance of these tests to the children in our community.

Not all local athletes get good coverage

First off I would like to say that this area has a lot of talented kids that participate in high school sports. One of which is wrestling. Wrestling happens to be one of the most mentally, physically and demanding sports to the athletes. Each one practices and trains to be the best they can be. But the Tribune-Star sports section thinks that Terre Haute North and Terre Haute South are the only schools that deserve to be written about, which is sad.
Don’t get me wrong, the students from North and South train hard. But so do the students from West Vigo, Sullivan, South Vermillion and Northview. In the newspaper the MIC conference was more important than the WIC conference, which was held the same day.
My son wrestles for West Vigo and did win several tournaments this year along with a record of 35-4 and also broke several school records, one of which was previously held by South coach Gabe Cook. Congratulations to Levi Edwards for an excellent season. It is so disappointing to have so many kids doing great things and NOT getting any recognition because they don't attend “the right” school in the Terre Haute area.
I think the Tribune-Star sports section needs to hire someone from a smaller town so that all the athletes get covered. Feb. 13, 2010, was the semistate wrestling tournament. If you read the local sports section you would have thought that T.H. North and T.H. South were the only ones to attend this tournament. Well, there were other local schools there too:
West Vigo — Levi Edwards 35-4; Sullivan — Holden Fudurich 30-3; South Vermillion — Dalton Millikan 37-3, Ross Hoggett 37-3, Trent Wallace 35-6, Spencer Bishop 21-13; Northview — Luke Pingleton 24-3; T.H. South — Tsali Lough 21-13, Austin McClain 26-12, Jordan Jansen 25-4, P.J. Montgomery 34-3, Dakota Case 31-6; T.H. North — David Knight 38-2.
All had excellent records. Great job, boys!
There were several wrestlers on all the teams that had great records, great matches and reached personal goals. To them I say congratulations. And great work because wrestling is hard work.
To the Tribune-Star sports pages, I say shame on you.
The spring sports are getting ready to start maybe the sports staff can do a better. We will have to wait and see.
