Seeking help to make our city better
I have lived in Terre Haute my whole life, 28 years. I am actually one of few in my generation who like it here. I work hard and I love my job. But, like a lot of people here, I don’t make much. I struggle, as many are, but have managed to get myself and my daughters a place to call home.
It’s not in a very good neighborhood but we all have to deal with certain things in our lives we aren’t happy about. My issue is that it seems this neighborhood is just forgotten about. I have little issues, like every Friday I have to walk through the alleys to locate my trash can because the trash people take all the cans from my block down the alley to a “T” and leave them there. The cans get “stolen” by other inhabitants of the neighborhood and it’s just frustrating.
I take my can to the alley every Thursday night for pick up on Friday morning and I bring it back to my back door when I am able to locate it on Friday afternoons. Half of the time I’m not able to locate it until Saturday when someone has put their trash in it. I know this seems like something petty to stress over, but come on. I am educated and work full time. I am raising two beautiful little girls, and I am just tired. I hate having to track the can down.
Another of my issues is my mail. Three times now I have had important pieces of mail be reported as “not deliverable.” I believe it isn’t a water bill or Duke energy bill, but my drivers license was sent back to the BMV, along with a couple other items. I don’t know if it’s my mailman or USPS but I promise it’s deliverable. I live here. I’m here right now.
Perhaps if things like this didn’t happen in “bad” neighborhoods, people like me — hard-working people who are actually trying to make something of their lives — might be more inclined to move to these areas and help clean up Terre Haute’s bad parts. If the people are treated like they don’t matter, they are going to act like they don’t matter.
I will continue to hold my head up and do my part at my house but those around me, they just don’t care.

Club style show a major success
The Woman’s Department Club has many people to thank for the success of their “Doll Up For Spring” style show.

Mr. Todd Patterson, manager of Macy’s, was the emcee of the styles shown. His casual demeanor and humor made for very entertaining and delightful afternoon.
We are so very grateful to David Mitchell for compiling our program books for the past eight years. They are always so attractive to promote the theme of the Style Show each year.
Thanks to all the members of the Women’s Department Club who worked together to organize this Style Show. Each year it seems to get better.
Again, this year, we are grateful to the Country Club of Terre Haute for all their cooperation in the set-up for this event and for providing a delicious lunch. We have been able to depend on their professionalism for the last eight years.
Lucky prize winners for the afternoon were Jeanie Sturm ($400 cash) and Barbara Forsythe ($400 gift cards) with their winning raffle tickets. Gift card donations were from Baesler’s Market, Idle Creek Dawg Leg Restaurant, Gingersnaps, Speedway, Cracker Barrel, Applebee’s Olive Garden, Mike’s Market, Walgreens, Outback, MCL Cafeteria, Chili’s and Lowe’s. Macy’s gave a $150 shopping coupon won by Madonna Glick and throughout the Style Show Macy’s awarded many $20 coupons.

Sen. Lugar is a serious leader
America is amidst difficult times. Our economy is struggling. Confidence in government hovers at all-time lows. Both Republicans and Democrats are submerged in bitter, partisan politics — too often putting special interests and radical extremism above the will of the people.
The 2012 Republican primary for U.S. Senate in Indiana offers Hoosiers a clear choice — to worsen this bitterness and extremism or to send serious leadership to Washington, D.C.
Richard Mourdock blames bipartisanship for America’s mess, saying teamwork has “brought us to the brink of bankruptcy.” Wrong. It’s the bitter, partisan politics of today’s so-called leaders that has us gridlocked. It’s time to end the division. It’s time to unify Americans.
Lugar has always been an honest, conservative voice for Hoosier values. In the 1980s, Lugar was one of President Reagan’s most ardent Senate backers. Today, Lugar is a fighter against Obamacare, champion of the Fair Tax and one of the staunchest supporters of the Keystone XL Pipeline’s domestic oil and thousands of American jobs.
Mourdock decided that every campaign ad would attack Lugar, and he has tried his hardest to make this race a referendum on Dick Lugar. I disagree with Mourdock’s strategy. It offers no solutions to problems facing Hoosiers. This election is about finding a leader to represent Hoosier values in Washington, D.C. Sen. Dick Lugar has a proven record of doing just that, and that is why I proudly support his re-election bid and encourage others to do the same.
