Candidate would be team builder

“I think leadership comes from integrity — that you do whatever you ask others to do. I think there are non-obvious ways to lead. Just by providing a good example as a parent, a friend, a neighbor makes it possible for other people to see better ways to do things. Leadership does not need to be a dramatic, fist in the air and trumpets blaring, activity.” (Scott Berkun)

This quote describes my friend and a devoted citizen of our community who is running for County Council at-large, Mr. Rick Burger. Rick is a role model and strives to make a difference as a parent, friend, neighbor, citizen and leader. He believes in our community and has demonstrated his commitment to Terre Haute through his actions and words. He moved his family here 9 1⁄2 years ago and has worked at Duke Energy for 35 years. He has stated that he believes this community has immense potential and proves to be a great place to raise a family.

I got to know Rick through his family’s involvement with Camp Invention and also by working with his wonderful wife, Karen. Rick was eager to provide financial assistance to help students attend a summer camp focusing on science, technology, engineering and math. He has also taken an active role in many local government and community organizations.

Rick Burger is a good communicator and team builder. I believe he will create partnerships to support economic development, education, a better quality of life, and focus on job creation in Terre Haute. He will seek to solve problems by using common-sense solutions. Rick is a natural leader and will provide strong leadership to truly strive to make Terre Haute and Vigo County “a level above” the rest.

It has been stated, “The leaders who work most effectively, it seems to me, never say ‘I.’ And that’s not because they have trained themselves not to say ‘I.’ They don’t think ‘I.’ They think ‘we’; they think ‘team.’ They understand their job to be to make the team function. They accept responsibility and don’t sidestep it, but ‘we’ gets the credit. … This is what creates trust, what enables you to get the task done.” (Peter F. Drucker)

Rick has a “we” or T.E.A.M. guiding philosophy. He has a “Dare to Dream” challenge to the people in this community to believe in yourself and get involved. He believes our attitude is 50 percent of the challenge, yet we must all work together to accomplish our objective.  He encourages everyone to remember the word T.E.A.M. because “Together Everyone Accomplishes More!”

I am proud to support Rick Burger for County Council at-large.

New event for local golfers

Hulman Links recently hosted a new event for area golfers. It was a Par 3 tournament that replicated the exact yardages used at the Master’s Par 3 tournament.

A great time was had by all thanks to our sponsors, Wells Fargo and Dever Distributing. Wells Fargo sponsored our meal as well as a shoot-out on the ninth hole that could have earned a participant $50,000. Unfortunately, no one made the hole in one, but Chuck Payne did win the closest to the pin award.

Dever Distributing provided tee gifts for all the entrees and also gave golf bags to division winners.

Congratulations to Mark Neaderhiser, men’s division champ; Stephanie Meyer, women’s division champ; and Russ Campbell, senior division champ.

From the Terre Haute golf community, a sincere thanks to both Wells Fargo and Dever Distributing for helping us promote golf here in Terre Haute.
