Embracing those liberal definitions
After so many letters from Shirley Thomas, each trumpeting her obsessive left-wing views, I have finally decided to respond. Her most recent assault was directed at a previous letter writer with the intention of belittling him for his opinions, which she claims left her thoroughly baffled.
Being the guru of all things liberal, she claimed to have searched the web for every possible meaning associating with the words “liberal” or “liberalism” in order to illustrate the previous letter writer’s errors while enlightening the rest of us. She actually numbered and listed all the meanings and definitions she believes describes the words “liberal” or “liberalism.”
Number one on her list of definitions stated that liberalism “actually favors reforming political and religious affairs.” Is that to imply we should change our current political form of government and our long-standing religious beliefs? Her next attempt at defining liberalism refers to “a belief favorable with concepts allowing maximum individual freedom of expression.” I believe I actually experienced one of those “freedom of expression” situations once while visiting an unfamiliar city and suddenly discovering that some of the locals were holding a Gay Pride Parade. It’s surprising how uncomfortable witnessing a totally uninhibited public expression of individual freedom can be. Particularly if you’re not into that. You gotta love those civil liberties crusaders.
Her letter continued to embellish the word liberal as she further defines its meaning as “having total freedom of action in matters of personal beliefs” which she contends is good thing because it allows for limitless expression of dissident artists and writers without subjecting them to rules of propriety. So let’s characterize this; their belief in this higher purpose encompasses the same doctrine and falls under the same pretext as does their support for pornography. Perhaps Shirley would advocate the abandonment of all moral and social boundaries for the sake of unorthodox artists and writers?
I was not particularly motivated to write this letter for any of the reasons above. It was the last two definitions that got to me. They were hilarious. In everything Shirley has ever written to the editor, she has expressed her slanted, liberal, one-sided, biased, radical left-wing opinions. It’s her trademark. So when she proclaimed in her last two definitions that being a liberal meant “being tolerant, being open-minded, being free from prejudice and being free from bigotry,” I thought she was making some kind of joke.
Could it be possible that she simply doesn’t get it? Here’s Just a bit of advice for Shirley. How about doing a little web searching for the definitions of those words? Identifying their meanings might be helpful since your closing remarks were “to embrace fully the definitions I have listed above.” That would be a good thing. Enough said.

Terre Haute
People responded to help after mishap
I wanted to share my uplifting story though sad it may be.
We were driving home from Terre Haute where we spent Christmas with our children and their spouses. It was snowing that Tuesday morning but the highway was clear and safe enough for travel. There was a truck in front of us and six cars behind us, all keeping a safe distance. All of a sudden a big semi-truck passes us and right behind him a smaller truck with a trailer of some sort, throwing slush at the tires thusly causing us to be pulled in and go airborne, then into a slight nosedive as off we go into the drainage ditch. We blopped down hard on the drainage grill which stopped us from going to the other side into oncoming traffic. Whew!
This was an accident of random chance, a happenstance especially when visualizing all that could have happened, it would have been worse. This occurred near Sullivan.
Outside of being shaken up we were OK, but not the car. I cannot say enough about all the people from both sides of the highway who stopped in danger to offer help. My husband became so concerned with this danger.
Thank heaven for seat belts and cell phones, we were able to call for help. The county sheriff responded quickly and watched out for us and traffic while we waited for a wrecker. You bet all those who offered help and did us well (plus in all this I left my wallet at Mace/Ford and it was returned to me) are in my nightly prayers.
My view of humanity is restored and improved a thousand times over. Thanks be to God and all these people.
