Keystone pipeline is needed now
I am waiting anxiously to see what President Obama is going to do about the Keystone XL pipeline. I am sick and tired of gasoline prices going higher and higher. I strongly support building this pipeline because it would be a major step toward safeguarding petroleum supplies in this country.
That’s why I was so glad to see that Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar was able to pass the bill that gives Obama 60 days to make a decision. We need the pipeline now.
The Energy Information Administration says the average price for a gallon of gasoline in 2011 was $3.53, but is predicting it will be much higher in 2012, partly because of the uncertainty of uninterrupted supplies from countries like Iran, Iraq and Venezuela.
The Keystone XL pipeline would enable U.S. refiners to more than double input from Canada, to about 1.3 million barrels a day. That’s more than enough petroleum to replace all the oil we get from Venezuela. That should have a huge stabilizing effect on pump prices.
I may not agree with every single vote Lugar has cast in the senate, but it does seem that he gets the important stuff right. And more importantly, he knows how to pass a bill that’s desperately needed, even when Republicans are in the minority.

Great seasons for South Vigo sports
This past fall saw many great achievements for Terre Haute South athletics. First, the boys’ and girls’ soccer teams, the boys’ tennis team, and the boys’ cross country team all won sectional championships. The boys’ tennis team added their second straight regional championship, while both the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams earned a berth in the IHSAA state finals. It should also be noted that the girls’ cross-country team received the inaugural Webster Award, recognizing the team with the highest grade point average during its fall season.
In addition to the teams’ successes, several individuals received recognition. Jackson Bertoli, Nikki Thiede, Nic Henderson, Marissa Coutinho, Ian Cook, Kelli Buchanan, Tsali Lough, and Tyler Evans earned All-MIC honors, while senior Morgan Patterson advance to the IHSAA state finals in golf.
The team and individual accomplishments are very important, but what is often lost is the one-on-one work shared between our student athletes and coaches. Many life lessons are taught to our student athletes through athletics.
I express sincere gratitude for the work of all out coaches in this regard.
