TERRE HAUTE —
Community steps up to tee again
Recently, Indiana State University and Sycamore Athletics hosted the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Women’s Golf Championship at the Country Club of Terre Haute. Hundreds of student athletes, coaches, administrators, parents and fans from all over the Midwest, came to our great city for this Championship event. They stayed in our hotels and ate in our restaurants.
This is the first time that we have ever hosted the event, so many of the visitors did not know what they would find when they arrived in Terre Haute. After speaking with and meeting with dozens of the visitors they were wonderfully impressed with what our town and our golf community had to offer.
A comment made by one of the Missouri Valley Conference administrators said it all: “You guys have done a great job and if I had a vote, we would host this event here every year.”
Unfortunately, this championship is rotated among the member institutions. Therefore, we will not get this opportunity again for several years. But we certainly set the standard high for this event and the quality that will be expected at future tournaments in the MVC.
The event would not have taken place if not for the hard work and dedication of Head Coach Greg Towne, ISU Assistant Athletics Director Angie Lansing and Tournament Director Gordy Bryan.
The wonderful staff at the Country Club, including General Manager Randy Hutts and staff, Head Pro Jeff Sheets and staff, Chef Shelby Shober, Abby Williams, Becky Woods and their staffs at the club made this championship a quality and memorable experience for everyone involved.
We had nearly 60 community members who volunteered their time to the event and showed the class, dignity and quality of our community.
Lastly, I want to recognize the young ladies that are the student athletes on our outstanding women’s golf team. They are terrific young ladies who will be leaders in their chosen fields for many years to come. They are thoughtful, bright (3.51 team GPA) and expressed their appreciation to the many volunteers and professionals who worked at the tournament.
Thank you, Terre Haute, for putting your best foot forward during this event as we continue to show our commitment to excellence in many ways.
Go Sycamores!

Foolish comment missed its mark
Speech is a weapon much more lethal than people realize. When Hillary Rosen spoke publicly that “Ann Romney never worked a day in her life,” she should have been very careful to complete her thought. She should have added “outside of her home.” Of course, it is an extremely insulting statement.
Mrs. Ann Romney is very lucky to have stayed home to raise her five sons because she was a rich man’s wife. Not many women are that lucky. Most women (more than 50 percent) will have no choice but to work in both jobs, being a home mom and a working mom.
I can give my case as an example. I worked full time as a medical doctor (pathologist), sometimes covering two hospitals and driving 100 miles a day in the thick of winter with all the snow and sleet. Apart from professional work, I still had to take care of my child as conscientiously as possible, including chauffeuring her in the evening to all the extracurricular activities like music, dance, visits to the library, etc.
I had no choice to be a full-time home mom because I had to earn money to upkeep our home. But there is no doubt in my mind that full-time moms have plenty of work to do. And all too often in the absence of appreciation. Not to mention the absence of a paycheck.
So allow me to offer some advice to Hillary Rosen by way of Mark Twain: “Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”

Terre Haute
Newest enemy worse than all
I’ve lived through the Cold War where the communist was going to destroy the United States. Next was the terrorists who are planning on destroying the United States.
We now have something that is threatening to destroy the United States. It is a white powder called meth. It is doing a better job destroying our country and our families than the communists and terrorists put together.

FLASHPOINT: Hoosiers got steady hand in recent session
As the General Assembly began its work last November, as Speaker of the House, I pledged a renewed spirit of bipartisanship with legislators working together to solve our state’s most pressing challenges. As this year’s legislative session concludes, representatives from throughout the state — Republican and Democrat — have joined together to address those issues at the forefront of Hoosier minds: maintaining our state’s fiscal integrity, spurring job creation and expanding education opportunities for every Hoosier family.
