The Rose-Hulman Board of Trustees shares the deep sense of loss at the passing of President Matt Branam. As we pay respects to Matt and his family, and respond to the unprecedented challenge of his sudden absence, the board wishes to clearly communicate one central point:
This Institute is not going on hold.
Matt’s goal of “defining a path beyond being ‘Best’ to becoming ‘Great’” is Rose-Hulman’s goal. His team of administrators, our faculty, staff, students, alumni, employers, trustees, supporters and friends have all contributed to the current “Great” Debate strategic planning process. Each of us has distilled value and direction from it, and each of us will continue to do so.
As The “Great” Debate has unfolded in Rose-Hulman gatherings across the country, the teams supporting the process have been collecting, analyzing, and synthesizing information and impressions provided by our alumni and friends. This vital activity will not stop. It will continue to shape the strategy through which Rose-Hulman — again to quote Matt — “will rise to meet the toughest challenges of the future, and set a new standard for educating the engineers, scientists, mathematicians, and leaders of the technological future.”
Our progress so far is a credit to President Branam’s leadership, but, as he would have been the first to emphasize, it is not the work of any one person. As the Board of Trustees carries out its responsibility to put into place the next leadership of Rose-Hulman, it is with the distinct expectation that this leadership and the Institute will not return to some previous stage of the process.
The way is forward, and the continuity of our journey from “Best” to “Great” will be a tribute to Matt Branam and to every person in the Rose-Hulman community who helps make this vision a reality.
We have appreciated the outpouring of sympathy in the last few days from all our constituents near and far and especially from our own Terre Haute community. We look forward to your support in the days ahead.

Cheers to Big
Read committee
A special thanks to the Wabash Valley Big Read Planning Committee for an outstanding job. Ray Bradbury’s “Fahrenheit 451” was an excellent choice. The programs, beginning on Feb. 23 and ending on April 13, were diverse and exceptional.
The presentations by Bradbury’s official biographer, Sam Weller, Sharon Russell's comments at the “Fahrenheit 451” movie and Lisa Petrulis’ “Six Degrees of Subversion,” were outstanding.
Please give a round of applause to Chris Schellenberg, Gary Daily, Teddie Graham, Don Layton, the always enthusiastic Betty Martin, Pat Minnis, Judy Mullican, Joanne Spann, Suzanne Van Reed and Rosa Lee Weir.

FLASHPOINT: Hoosiers got steady hand in recent session
As the General Assembly began its work last November, as Speaker of the House, I pledged a renewed spirit of bipartisanship with legislators working together to solve our state’s most pressing challenges. As this year’s legislative session concludes, representatives from throughout the state — Republican and Democrat — have joined together to address those issues at the forefront of Hoosier minds: maintaining our state’s fiscal integrity, spurring job creation and expanding education opportunities for every Hoosier family.
