Cell phones and driving are a recipe for disaster

Have you ever had a 4,000 pound missile aimed in your direction? This happens every day while people aim their cars down the road while on their cell phones. Talking on their cell phones seems to be the primary objective, with driving becoming second.

I made it through today only after seeing two stop sign runners, one red light runner, and one who pulled out in front of me on First Street, where I had to hit my brakes. I could see all of them on their cell phones. I even had a car pass me on U.S. 41 with the driver on a cell phone and papers strung out across the steering wheel. Two other drivers on cell phones almost hit a car stopped for the light.

These are the ones you can see on cell phones, some of the vehicles have darkened windows to keep you in suspense.

Needless to say, most of these drivers had very important calls, such as what movie to pick up at the video store, or to stop and pick up bread.

I’m sure that in a few years when someone has the nerve to go against the big telephone corporations that statistics will show as many car wrecks from cell phones as with drunk drivers. Eight states and D.C. already have laws against the use of cell phones while driving. Maybe Indiana will be smart enough to get a law passed also.

I guess it is all right to use your cell phone while driving “if you have your seat belt on” and “if you aren’t stopping at the pharmacy for some Sudefed.”
