Report news, don’t make it

As I woke up to the Oct. 1 Tribune-Star, the headlines read “Obama nears magic 270 electoral votes.” Well my, my, let’s all go back to sleep. I didn’t realize it was November already. I must have missed it. The election is over. I’m so glad Thomas Beaumont from the AP has decided to let everyone know about it and the Tribune decided that this decision belonged on the top of the front page.

I believe this article is supposed to be on the opinion page and not the headlines of the paper. I assume that the Tribune has joined the likes of MSN, CNN and MSNBC to decide what is in our best interest. The Tribune is supposed to report the news and not make it. So we are just supposed to skip voting now because we know who won?

Did you also report that Thomas Dewey had won?

Upsets are possible. Polls can be wrong. Why don’t you let the voting public make up their mind and then vote. The morning after the vote, you can report the news, all the winners.

Why can’t all Americans be allowed to vote and then we count them to see who wins?

If the presidential election is over, who won the rest of the races? Why didn’t you inform us of those decisions, too? Maybe we want to know that, too?

It is time that all the media should go to reporting the news instead of taking sides. That is your job. That is why we pay to receive the paper. If we want your opinion, then put it on the opinion page and not the lead headline.

Appreciation for funds raised

For the third consecutive year, the staff and residents of Sycamore Manor hosted a very successful event in support of The WILL Center. On Sept. 14 they provided the site, the meal and the lion’s share of the articles to be sold at the yard sale to the Soup Luncheon/Garage Sale.

Through their efforts we raised more than $800 to be designated to a fund for wheelchair ramp materials. This project — The WILL Center has already built 22 ramps this building season — provides individuals with disabilities a fundamental access to their community.

To the staff and residents of Sycamore Manor, thank you so much, and we look forward to hosting again with you next year.
