Rail project won’t fix real problems

I read the recent article in the paper that said, “Railroads to help eliminate Crossings.”

I thought that finally our prayers had been answered. Poor fool me! Sure they’re going to get rid of the rinky-dinky ones that no one has any problem with. Our main concern is that holy horror on 19th and Margaret. Not once was it ever mentioned. The mayor keeps promising us an overpass there. And next week I’m going to sprout wings and fly!

I asked a clerk at the gas station on that corner just how many trains go past each day and ties up traffic. She said at least a dozen, and that’s just the day-time hours. She also said she lives in that neighborhood and the train traffic had cracked all the foundations in her house and her neighbors’ houses. There is a lawsuit waiting to happen. And these trains aren’t just passing through. They all stop and hold up traffic for an hour each time. Try to imagine the inconvenience to this neighborhood. That train station (and it is a station) should be moved out of town. Maybe at one time this area was considered out of town, but not any more.

I know I’m just talking to hear my head rattle. God knows no one is listening to me. And please don’t call me, Mr. Mayor, as I don’t believe you anymore.

Country music here — just look for it

In response to Mr. Lawson’s recent letter, real country music is hard to find but is available in the Indiana/Illinois area if you know where to find it.

First of all, Rod O’Kelley at Boot City offers a variety of music, including country, at his Opry shows on Saturday nights. One of his best shows features Lloyd Wood, a great country entertainer. As a steel guitar player of more than 50 years, I recently had the opportunity to tour Florida with the Rich Anderson Show featuring Mr. Wood and he is a tremendous talent.

Another show with real country music is the Bement Country Opry at Bement, Ill., located between Decatur and Champaign, there is a good show every Friday night. I am a member of the house band.

Other venues for real country include McLean County Opry, Gym Bob’s Jamboree, and New Salem Opry, all of which are in Illinois. To my knowledge the only show of this kind in Indiana is located in Wallace, where there is a gospel show on Monday and country shows on Thursday and Saturday nights.

All of the above-mentioned shows offers good, clean family entertainment at an affordable price.

It is apparent that the Terre Haute area should support an entertainment venue with the local talent available.

Just a side note, I am a proud member of the Wabash Valley Musicians Hall of Fame.

Impressive event at Rose-Hulman

Recently, 446 student athletes from 134 colleges in 27 states participated in the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field National Championships at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. What a great event for the campus and our community.

Rose-Hulman continually sets the standard of excellence very high — certainly in academics, and now in athletics. Participants and fans not only injected over $500,000 into our local economy but left with the sense that Terre Haute is a caring, innovative host.

The student athletes and officials experienced a first-class venue to showcase their skills. However, the greatest assets of this national event are the wonderful people behind the scenes. The dedicated staff, administrators, student volunteers and board members of Rose-Hulman are wonderful hosts. The event committee was comprised of: Larry Cole, Committee Chairman, Mark Farner (Aramark), Tom Miller, Matt Sinclair, Al Morrison, Gary Flora and Security, David Steenerson, Matt Cole, Scott Keller, Brenda Goble, Jon Prevo, Dave Patterson, and Kevin Lanke.

Larry Cole’s passion for the sport of track and field is inspiring. His goal is creating the best possible experience for the sport’s athletes was achieved. Larry has positively enhanced the standards of track and field. As 21 national champions were being crowned I couldn’t help but ponder how many people left our community impressed by our abilities.

Thank you, Rose-Hulman. Hats off to everyone involved!

Rise up against greedy attitudes

“Bonus — something given or paid over and above what is due.” So says Random House Dictionary.

How is it possible that an employee bonus be written into a contract allowing a bonus to be paid whether or not the employer, AIG, realizes a profit or loss?

If the American middle class, en masse, doesn’t rise up against AIG and $165 million in employee bonuses, what will it take to cause a change in the arrogant, obnoxious, greedy, immoral attitude that has overtaken the financial sector of our country?
