Church making big difference for kids
Kids Hope USA was founded by Dr. Virgil Gulker in three pilot sites in Michigan in November 1995. Since this time it has grown to encompass 29 states, 429 churches and touched over 6,800 at-risk students.
The program is designed to teach churches how to give hope to at-risk public elementary school children through a relationship with a caring church member. The church member spends one hour a week with an at-risk student to build a caring relationship and mentor the child. It is their “one child, one hour, one church, one school” philosophy that truly makes a difference in our students’ lives.
Fuqua Elementary was lucky enough to find that church partner in the Fall of 2004. Terre Haute First Southern Baptist Church, under the guidance of Pastor Ryan Berryhill, saw the need and wanted to be involved in Kids Hope USA. Wanda Bell began working as the director. She trained mentors, met with school staff, meticulously paired students and mentors and planned social events to celebrate the partnership.
For the last four years, once a week mentors have visited our students. They have spent their hour playing a game, listening, smiling and building a caring relationship that has touched students’ lives. Mentors have gone beyond the “one hour a week” to volunteer at Grandparents’ Day, serve chili at our Fall Carnival and work at our Spring Fish Fry. They have become involved in Fuqua far beyond original expectations. The mentors have become role models for our kids and adults.
Please believe that one hour a week really does make a difference in the life a child. I see it everyday, thanks to First Southern Baptist Church.

Families appreciate outpouring of care
The “Ric” Schroeder families wish to thank all their family and friends for their prayers, cards, calls and concerns in the last year and a half. Thanks to all the doctors, nurses and staff of Regional Hospital’s ICU. Thanks so much for all the floral tributes and mementos and the food brought to our houses, the Ladies of Trinity Lutheran who served a delicious meal after the funeral.
Thanks to all the memorials to Ric’s favorite charity — the paving of the parking lot at Trinity Lutheran Church.
Special thanks to Pastor Joe Faust who was with us every day the last week and to Dan Walls for his special prayers. Thanks to our great organist, Laura Fischer, and soloist Babs Bellgraph, and the reader and communion preparers.
Thanks to Jenkins Funeral Home and to The First Baptist Church for letting us have the viewing and funeral there. God saw him getting tired, a cure not meant to be. So he put his arms around him and whispered “Come with Me”.
— The families of Genny Schroeder (Rhonda Hollingsworth, Robbie Schroeder, Ricky Schroeder, Bob Schroeder, Tom Neidigh, Starla Neidigh, and Terry Neidigh)
