The sports rivalry between Terre Haute North and South rages each year on “land” (football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, wrestling, baseball, softball, cross country, golf, track) and even by “sea” (swimming).
In the “land” category, you have to add bowling as yet another fierce, yet at the same time, friendly rivalry.
The Patriots and Braves are joined by Sullivan and South Vermillion to form the Blue Chip North Conference (boys and girls divisions) which been competing from November through January. “Home” venues include Imperial Lanes (North), Terre Haute Bowling Center (South), Sullivan Lanes (Sullivan) and Paradise Bowl (South Vermillion).
This season, the North boys (followed by South) and South girls (followed by North) have been the leading teams.
The BCNC champions will be determined in a position round — featuring a pair of North-South clashes — on Monday at the Bowling Center.
All eight teams will compete in Indiana High School sectional play on Jan. 31 (individual competition at Paradise Bowl) and Feb. 1 (team competition at Sullivan). The top boys and girls team, plus the top five boys and girls individuals will move on to the regional round at the Bowling Center on Sat., Feb. 11.
North’s boys — coached by Phil Cooper — are deep in talent and numbers, both in scores and bowlers with seven bowlers competing quite well in Thursday’s final regular season match on Thursday.
To wit, Allen Breshears raised his season average to 225 with games of 280-258 (538 series), while Matt Fields improved to 221 with lines of 289-256 (545 series). With those series, Breshears is now second and Fields third in state rankings. Fields is tied for fourth in the state with his high game of 289.
Team-wise on Thursday, North produced the top-ranked team series (2,349) — using two different lineup combinations, plus the fifth (1,180) and sixth (1,169) best team single-game scores in the state. Their team average (1,003) is fifth best in the state.
Besides Breshears and Fields, other key team members for North include Scott Higginbotham, Trevor Monroney, Chris Salyer, Billy Horning and Zach Perry.
Leading the South boys — coached by Paul Stone — are Jared Norris (197 average), Jordan Stone (187), Ethan Michaels (181) and Jacob Wright (176).
For South Vermillion, they are led by Riley Wineinger (168) and Brady Anderson (165), while Sullivan is paced by Nick Martin (166), Caleb Unger (165) and Michael Rosebraugh (162).
In the girl’s division, South — coached by Matt Lugar — has been led by two veteran bowlers in Brittany Gambill (202.7 average) and Kara Bunting (200.3). Both lead in match play wins with nine apiece, with teammate Alicia Tarwater (153) third with eight.
Gambill has high game (269) and high two-game series (496). Her series (496) ranks third in the state, while Bunting (477) is fifth.
North — coached by Dave Fields — has a balanced attack, led by Stacey Shephard (173), Heather Breshears (166) Sammie Eaglin (165), Regina White (159) and Tabby Dixon (153). White had a two-game series of 508 (244-264) on Thursday, which slots her second in the individual state rankings.
South Vermillion features Chelsa Maloney (188 average in just five games), Tara Buskirk (164), Heather Houston (159) and Cassandra Colter (144). Buskirk and Colter are tied for fourth in match play wins with seven. Sullivan is paced by Paula Horst (144).
We’ll track these talented bowlers throughout the state tournament.
Paulin has senior moment — Veteran Terre Haute bowler Dave Paulin, a regular high game and high series leader in the Bush Restaurant Senior league at Vigo Bowl, won the Ohio Valley Bowlers Tour stop at the Bowling Center on Jan. 8.
Paulin claimed the $300 first prize by defeating fellow Terre Haute bowler Harold Costello 215-208 in the championship game.
In the earlier stepladder finals, Mike Mercier of Effingham, Ill., eliminated Terre Haute’s Harley Jones 245-172, then Costello defeated Mercier 258-212 and Jim Williams of Murphysboro, Ill., 258-212.
Top area finishers were Paulin (first), Costello (second), Jones (third), Mike Fisher Sr. (sixth), Gary Busiere (seventh), John McWilliams (11th), Darrell Davis (13th), Jerry Wence (14th), Bob Lovvron (16th), Mike Zebrowski of Clinton (17th), Dave Marqua of Robinson, Ill., (18th) and Roy Kneeves (20th).
The next OVBT stop is in Henderson, Ky., on Jan. 29.
Super Bowl IV — By today, the Super Bowl IV (fourth tournament with Roman numerals in keeping with the NFL’s game) bowling extravaganza at Imperial Lanes has filled its 80 bowler field set for Sunday, Feb. 5.
The tournament is an A,B,C,D,E format — drawn at random by average — with six games bowled, three each in the morning and afternoon. The entry fee is $55 which includes free food all day.
The prize fund payout goes to the top six teams in the 16-team field.
PBA in the desert — Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star outfielder Luis Gonzalez, pitcher Russ Ortiz and former knuckleball pitcher and current D-backs broadcaster Tom Candiotti will roll out ceremonial first balls prior to the nationally-televised ESPN finals of the PBA Motel 6 Phoenix Classic at 1 p.m. today.
Candiotti is no stranger to bowling, having competed in last season’s 2005 GEICO Open after gaining a PBA Commissioner’s exemption. Despite being a pretty good league bowlers, he finished last in that tournament’s 14-game qualifying block.
He improved this week, bowling in the PBA Tour Qualifying Round for this week’s event. Candiotti finished 82nd out of the 87 bowling for six tournament slots. He averaged 170.4 for his seven-game block.
Bowling in style — The Palms Hotel and Resort in Las Vegas — owned by George Maloof, also the owner of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings — has taken bowling to an all-new level.
They have introduced the Kingpin Suite which features two full-sized bowling lanes. This retro style 4,240 square foot suite features two bedrooms, three bathrooms, LCD and plasma TV’s throughout. It also includes regulation bowling equipment, a pool table, full bar, and theater size projection television with lounge.
Everything you need for fun with your league buddies!
For basketball fans, they also have the Hardwood Suite featured in a recent Rick Reilly column in Sports Illustrated.
