TERRE HAUTE — The Landing at Fort Harrison mini-resort opened to the public last week and its eight-lane bowling facility is nestled right in the midst of this ambitious business undertaking.
Bowling had been a staple at the former Elks Country Club since it opened on the historic site of Fort Harrison, located in the northwest corner of Terre Haute overlooking the Wabash River.
If you haven’t been to this bowling facility recently, you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the many renovations.
The Landing will offer its customers the latest trend in the bowling industry, boutique bowling. Boutique bowling caters to parties or corporate groups, offering a cutting edge experience in addition to food and beverages.
The Landing’s brochure states a boutique bowling experience having an “edgy ambiance.”
“We’re on the edge of technology, computerization and what not,” stated The Landings’ bowling manager Brian Carapezza on Thursday.
Carapezza is a name familiar to area bowlers, being the former owner of Lucky Strike Bowl in Clinton. He states The Landing’s light show is as good as any in the Wabash Valley.
Coming within the next 30 days, according to Carapezza, is what he calls a virtual jukebox. Any type of music imaginable can be downloaded through the Internet on site for the desired party atmosphere.
The traditional league and open bowler has not been forgotten in this transformation. After all, Carapezza is an active member in the Greater Terre Haute Men’s Association.
The 700 Club will hold its final tournament of the season — Match Games — in late March or early April. Also, an annual Elks charity tournament is slotted for January.
A former long-time Elks men’s league, the ISU Physical Plant League, will return to its “old” lanes on Mondays after the first of the year.
Bowling rates are $3 per game, shoe rental is $2.50 and league play for three games is $8.50. There are numerous private party and party rental rates for either Monday-to-Thursday or Friday-to-Sunday dates.
A one-year pass for open play or league play per person is $400, while a family pass is $800 (up to five family members). Bowling passes can be bundled with golf and/or swimming at a reduced rate.
Bowling lane hours are 4 to 10 p.m. weekdays and from noon to 11 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

While President-elect Barack Obama dazzled voters in the lengthy campaign recently completed in early November, his bowling “ability” along the campaign trail was not quite as dazzling. To say the least.
During the primaries, Obama reportedly bowled a lowly 37 over seven frames on Mar. 29 in Altoona, Pa.
Obama jokingly told late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel soon after: “I hear there’s a bowling alley and obviously that hasn’t gone too well. So we’re getting rid of the bowling alley and replacing it with a basketball court in the White House.”
Instead of taking out the lanes, members of the Professional Bowlers Association are willing to perform a Presidential bowling intervention.
“Once the family is settled in, the PBA Tour will be pleased and anxious to send some of our top male and female professional bowlers in to give lessons to the President-elect and first lady on the White House bowling lanes,” said PBA VP/COO Tom Clark.
“I have one bowling tip for Obama: take a lesson from me,” said Billy Oatman, the first African American on the exempt PBA Tour. “Call Billy Oatman and he’ll get a lesson.”
“I saw the clip [Obama bowling] on YouTube and I have some tips for Obama,” added PBA star Norm Duke. “Obama’s been in a suit and tie too long. He needs to get some athletic apparel and a bowling ball that fits his hand. He needs to work on hitting the head pin because he didn’t do that very well [in the YouTube clip].”
According to whitehousemuseum.org, bowling lanes at the White House were first built in the ground floor of the West Wing as a birthday gift for President Truman in 1947 — located in the present-day Situation Room. Truman didn't care for bowling himself, but did allow staff to start a league.
The lanes were moved to the Old Executive Office Building in 1955 to make way for a mimeograph room.
In 1969, Richard Nixon and his wife Pat, both avid bowlers, had a new one-lane alley built (paid for by friends) in an underground workspace area below the driveway leading to the North Portico. That’s where its located today.

The Barnes Construction team, in a four-person mixed league at Imperial Lanes on Dec. 1, rolled a scratch game of 948 — with just a 728 team average.
In the third and final game of the night, Bob Harvey (194 average) rolled a 257, Alex Ixba (161 avg.) had a 224, Ann Barnes (170 avg.) fired a 234, while Bill Barnes (203 avg.) added a 233.
The previous high team actual game in this league was 838, obliterated by Barnes Construction by a whopping 110 pins. Their three-game team series was 2,469, exceeding a previous high of 2,360.
