Team Paulin edged Team Pruett 8,788-8,734 to win the highly-competitive 2008 Shootout at the Terre Haute Bowling Center recently.
The Shootout is a A-B-C-D (based on average) blind-draw tournament matching up teams of four bowlers with differing skill levels based on bowling averages. Twelve team competed this year.
The winning team consisted of Jeff Acord, Dave Renshaw, Jared Norris and Dave Paulin. The runner-up squad was Phil Huynh, Josh Snowden, Paul Wright and Marc Pruett.
Rounding out the top five teams were Rick Rogers, Doug Weaver, Dave Monroney and John Fugate (Team Fugate: 8,680); Bob Lovvron, Jim Sullivan, Clint Woods and Guy Johnson (Team Johnson; 8,647) and John Menegheni, Gene Bedwell, Troy Williams and Darrell Davis (Team Davis; 8,640).
Individually, high average went to Davis at 250.4 (228, 278, 264), Austin Marsh (242.2), Ryan Nichols (241.0), Weaver (239.1) and Norris (237.5).
High games were Norris (290), Weaver (288), Luke Ruble (280), Nichols (280) and Williams (279).

n Bowling Center — The duo of April White-Stephanie Gilbert won the Greater Terre Haute Women’s Bowling Association Buddy-No Tap Tournament at the Bowling Center on Oct. 25-26.
White-Gilbert recorded a score of 1,887, topping Crystal Sullivan-Dan Dierdorf (1,812). Other top finishers were Alusta Kneeves-Mike Zebrowski (1,771), Sherry Morley-Carl Morley (1,757), Pat Stewart-Gary Hiddle (1,737), Sarah Machino-Robert Morley (1,721) and Amanda Harris-Tod Harris (1,702).
Monthly No Tap tournament winners at the Bowling Center in October were Gregg Jolly (men, 920) and Carolyn Wilkins (women, 806).
Also, mark your calendars for THBC’s New Year’s Day event. Stay tuned for further updates as this year’s annual event is in the early planning stages.
n Vigo Bowl — On Tuesday, Gordy’s Tuesday Night King of the Hill singles sweeper is set for 7 p.m. with a payout of $100 (first), $70 (second) and $40 (third) based on 21 bowlers. This is a handicap tournament (80 percent of 220 average).
On Nov. 16, a Mixed Shootout will start at 11 a.m. Sign up as man-woman couples, and will be placed in A-B division based on average. This is a handicap event. Cost is $50 per couple, with entries due by 10 p.m. on Nov. 14.
On Nov. 23, a Youth Singles No Tap Tournament is slated for 11 a.m. Cost is $10, with six divisions (three boys, three girls).
On Thanksgiving Day, two shifts of No Tap Doubles are at 5:30 and 8:30 p.m. Cost is $18 if registered early, $20 on Thanksgiving Day. Note: for the uninitiated, a No Tap Tournament is regular scoring with a twist. A strike is awarded if you knock down nine or 10 pins.
On Jan. 18, the 2008 Team Shootout will start at 11 a.m. This is a scratch event and bowlers must have a 180 average or higher. Teams will bowl five games.
Finally, the Junior City Tournament concludes today.
n 700 Club — The 700 Club commenced its season with the Baker Team Tournament (no results reported) at Paradise Bowl on Oct. 12. Today, its first of its two Scratch Singles events at the Bowling Center.
Future events scheduled are Scratch Doubles (Imperial Lanes/Dec. 7), 25th Floyd Morgan 700-YABA (Vigo Bowl/Jan. 11), Scratch Singles (Vigo Bowl/Jan. 25), Trio Tournament (Brazilian Lanes/Feb. 15), 15th Match Games (former Elks/Mar. 8) and Blind Draw Doubles (location TBA/Apr. 12).
All start times are 11 a.m. EST.

n PBA Tour — Norm Duke became the first player in Professional Bowlers Association history to win three consecutive “major” tournaments, after he won the PBA World Championship in Wichita, Kan. two weeks ago.
Duke, a 27-year PBA veteran, had won the World Championship and U.S. Open in 2007-08, before winning this season’s World Championship title.
Brad Angelo won the PBA Pepsi Viper Tournament in Omaha, Neb. last Sunday.
The PBA Tour is in nearby Hammond this week for the Lake County Indiana Golden Anniversary Championship with the live finals airing on ESPN at 1 p.m. today.
n PBA Women’s Series — Stefanie Nation won the first event in this season’s PBA Women’s Series, which ran in conjunction with the Pepsi Viper Tournament. Nation defeated Michelle Feldman 225-200 in the championship match.
The PBA Women’s Series will run concurrently with seven PBA Tour events. Their next stop is in Taylor, Mich. with the televised finals next Sunday.

Being the nice guy that I am, I have happily accompanied my wife for several night-time quilting lessons (for her, not me) in Paris, Ill. recently.
To while away some my idle time about three weeks ago, I stopped in Parisian Lanes to see if anybody I used to bowl with from Paris was still bowling.
Sure enough, Jim Bradshaw was there, and we caught up with the whereabouts of bowlers we both knew. He also informed me that my good friend Dean Leeman — who announced to me a few years ago he was “retiring” from bowling — had “un-retired” and was one of eight guys rotating on a five-man team.
I’d seen Dean last at a Paris High School softball game a couple of years ago, watching his talented daughter Shelby play. He wasn’t at Parisian on my first visit, but I did run into him last week.
I reminded him that he “ruined” my best bowling day ever at Parisian Lanes — I can’t remember the year, but it was on a Super Bowl Sunday and the Washington Redskins were playing — in a West Central Bowlers Association tournament.
I had qualified for my first finals, advancing to the top four. In the first round of the finals, I beat a house bowler named Francis Drake — I kid you not, I remember because of his sharing the name of the famous explorer Sir Francis Drake.
Then I was paired off with Leeman in the semifinal match. I remember him getting a spare in the first frame and I started out with five strikes in a row, and I thought this was indeed going to be my day. But after his one spare, he ran off something like eight strikes in a row and beat me 260-something to 250 something.
We both remembered he bowled Bryan Barton in the final game, but neither of us could recall who won.
Nevertheless, my day was “ruined”, and to make matters worse, by the time I had driven home, I had missed the first half of the Super Bowl — this was long before DVRs.
I also know, I’m sure I probably “ruined” Dean’s weekend a few years later. He bowled a solid 700 series — back when 700s meant something — in the doubles event of the Men’s City Tournament at Clinton’s Paradise Bowl. But all I could manage as his partner was something like four strikes and a 511 series.

Team members Chris Drake, Rick Fugate, Sean Pepper and Trevor Monroney had a score of 8,663. Second place went to Team Nichols (Ryan Nichols, David Paulin, David Monroney, Mike Gambill) at 8,554. -
