TERRE HAUTE — Does the unlikely combination of 32 two-person bowling teams, 16-foot slabs of ice, frozen turkeys and chainsaws sound intriguing?
Well, the new Metropolis — my wife’s favorite shopping destination, by the way — outdoor shopping mall in nearby Plainfield featured the first Indiana State Frozen Turkey Bowling State Championships last weekend.
While this may unofficially be a first for the state of Indiana, Elegant Ice our of Columbus, Ohio, has already staged these type of competitions in Ohio and Michigan.
The competition consisted of four 16-foot slabs of ice used as lanes, with pins set up and cushioned by bales of hays. A full field of 32 two-person teams then bowled in an elimination format just like the real game of bowling. Only throwing frozen turkeys down the lane.
Not to leave out the children, they could try their hand bowling on a smaller lane using Cornish game hens. Also on the agenda for all ages was a “dueling chainsaw” ice sculpture performance.
Sounds like fun to me.

But all is not wacky on the subject of bowling as we begin another season of Kegler’s Korner:
n Breshears Blaze-ing — Allen Breshears has enjoyed a busy start to his sophomore season of collegiate bowling for the nationally-acclaimed Vincennes University men’s bowling team.
Breshears, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound graduate of Terre Haute North, has stepped up his game this season, bowling in all of VU’s scheduled events.
As a freshman, his Trailblazers’ team finished second in last year's NJCAA tournament, only 123 pins behind champion Erie (N.Y.) Community College. That was the same Erie team VU defeated to win the 2006 NJCAA title.
Below is Breshears’ bowling resume thus far in 2007:
• Oct. 6-7 — The Trailblazers opened the season at the Midwest Collegiate Classic at AMF Bowlero Lanes in Milwaukee, Wisc., finishing 13th among 40 teams in the field. Breshears posted a 195 average (1,563 pins, eight games).
• Oct. 13-14 — VU finished sixth in the 25-team Brickyard Classic at Sport Bowl in Indianapolis. Breashears led VU’s “Blue” team to a seventh-place finish with 1,162 pins over six games for a 193 average. He had the high three-game series of 606.
• Oct. 20-21 — The Blazers placed fifth in the 36-team Pikeville Orange and Black Classic in Dayton, Ohio. VU’s “Blue” team finished 10th, led by Breshears 194 average (971 pins, five games).
• Oct. 27-28 — The Blazers competed in the 29-team Illinois BPA Classic in Freeport, Ill. Wichita State won the team title, while VU finished 19th overall. Breshears averaged just 167 (839 pins, five games).
• Nov. 3-4 — VU competed in the 22-team Purdue Boilermaker Classic in West Lafayette. Bowling for the Blazers’ “Blue” team once again, Breshears averaged 205 (1,028 pins, five games).

• Team Davis wins THBC Shootout — At Terre Haute Bowling Center, Team Davis easily won the 2007 THBC A-B-C-D Shootout and split the $1,300 first prize purse over the weekend of Nov. 17-18.
Team Davis — Darrell Davis, Jay Scamihorn, Sam Jones, Randy Jenkins — averaged 889 as a team over the 10 games rolled, five games each day. Individually, Davis averaged 245 a game, Scamihorn 221, Jenkins 219 and Jones 204.
Second place went to Team Costello ($700) — Harold Costello, Guy Johnson, Jim Sullivan, Bob Lovvron — with an team average 874.
Tournament sponsors were First Financial Bank, Pepsi-Cola and Affordable Awards.

• Wilkins a winner — At Clinton, Carolyn Wilkins was the winner of the 600 Club Singles Tournament at Paradise Bowl on Nov. 4.
Wilkins’ winning three-game handicap score was 662, followed by Joan Goetz (639), Cathy Wortman (622) and Alusta Kneeves (619).
• THBC No-Tap winners — At Terre Haute Bowling Center, Sean Pepper (876 score/Nov.), Darrell Davis (862 score/Oct.), Brittany Gambill (915 score/Nov.) and Nancy Effner (809 score/Oct.) were recent winners of monthly No-Tap tournaments.
For the uninitiated, in a no-tap game the scoring is the same as a regular game, but rolling a nine on your first ball results in a strike.
n New “Voice” for PBA telecasts — Rob Stone has been serving as the new lead play-by-play announcer on ESPN Sunday telecasts of Professional Bowling Association tournament finals in the 2007-08 season.
Stone brings a solid background in of all sports, soccer to the booth, spending most of the last decade broadcasting national and international soccer events for ESPN
Stone has joined veteran PBA analyst Randy Pedersen, who is entering his sixth season as the lead color announcer for Denny’s PBA Tour telecasts on ESPN.
