TERRE HAUTE — Finally, some good news concerning bowling at Indiana State University.

Congratulations are in order for Dr. Levon Garrison, ISU’s only “official” women’s bowling coach, and undeniably her top individual bowler, Vickie Parker Vallie. Both will be inducted as part of the 2007 class into the Indiana State University Athletic Hall of Fame on Feb. 3.

It’s a well deserved honor for both … and definitely long overdue.

I’ve known “Doc” Garrison since 1974, when I successfully tried out for the ISU men’s team, which she was also directing at the time. I had the privilege to bowl for her my junior and senior years, many times I’m sure she tolerated our team’s “always good-natured” shenanigans on road trips those two years.

Garrison, a professor of physical education at ISU from 1960-1988, was a pioneer in women’s intercollegiate sports.

During “Doc’s” 11-year run as women’s coach, her Sycamores won the National Intercollegiate Bowling Championship in 1984, sandwiched by a pair of national runner-up finishes in 1983 and 1985.

Prior to arriving at ISU, Parker won the Alberta Crowe Award in 1982 given to the outstanding youth bowler in the nation.

At ISU, the New Hampshire native was a Four-time first team All American. Identical to the ISU team results, she won the national collegiate individual championship in 1984 — while competing with a broken bone in her right hand — sandwiched around a pair of runner-up finishes in 1983 and 1985.

The induction ceremony will take place inside Tirey Hall on Feb. 3.

• High school report — It’s hard to believe, but the local high school bowling sectional is just over a week away. The sectional will be at the Terre Haute Bowling Center on Jan. 29 (team) and Jan. 31 (individual), both starting at 4:30 p.m.

With just one week remaining — the position round is at Sullivan Lanes on Tuesday — in their Blue Chip Conference regular season, the Terre Haute South boys and Terre Haute North girls have already clinched their respective championships.

For the boys, South has earned 51⁄2 of 6 possible points, while the North girls are undefeated at 6-0.

Members of the South boys team include Jacob Wright (205 average prior to last week’s action), Jordan Stone (181), Shane Dowell (185), Eric Myers (202), Dustin Morris (184), Jordan Taylor, Kurt Waggoner, Brad Fyfe and Keith Rader.

Other top boys bowlers in the league include North’s Zach Perry (203), Bill Horning (195), Trevor Monroney (194), Scott Higginbotham (192). Top Sullivan bowlers are Mike Rosebough (186) and Nick Martin (183). South Vermillion is led by Logan Pollard (198), Riley Wineinger (182) along with Tyler Haase and Brady Anderson (both 178).

For the North girls, team members include seniors Heather Breshears, Tabitha Dixon and Kassie Thompson, junior Siera Tanner, sophomore Missie Thompson and freshmen Kristin Zellars, Sara Shepherd and Ricki Bowker. North is co-coached by Christel Cooper and Dave Fields.

Top individuals for the girls league are South Vermillion’s Chelsea Maloney (180 average) along with North’s Breshears (172) and Zellars (167). Maloney has the league’s high game of 234, Zellars is close behind at 233.

The regional will be at Jasper on Feb. 10, the semi-state at Richmond — who decided that? — on Feb. 17, with the state finals at Indianapolis on Feb. 24.

• Men’s Association Tournament — On the theme of “finally,” I “finally” latched on to a hard copy of the results of the 89th Greater Terre Haute Men’s Association Tournament from back in November.

• Super Bowl V sold out — For the fifth year in a row, Imperial Lane’s Super Bowl Shootout on Feb. 4 — on Super Bowl Sunday, hence the name — is sold out. This year, the popular event was filled to capacity exactly one month early, on Jan. 4.

But don’t despair, Vigo Bowl will be hosting a pair of Shootouts the following two weekends. See below:

n Vigo Bowl Shootout(s) — Vigo Bowl will be hosting a pair of shootouts in February, one for men on Feb. 10-11, the other for women only on Feb. 18.

The men’s shootout will be a random-draw A-B-C-D-E tournament format, with a $65 entry fee. Bowlers must have a 185 average or higher, with entries due by Feb. 7.

Bowlers will roll five games each day — Feb. 10 at 12:30 p.m., Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. The top four teams will have a two-step Baker rolloff with No. 1 facing No. 4 and No. 2 facing No. 3. The two winners will meet for the championship.

A women’s shootout will be on Feb. 18 with an entry fee of just $20. Teams will be assigned randomly in an A-B-C format. Bowlers will roll five games, with the high score being declared the champion. This is a handicap event (90 percent of 600). Entries close on Feb. 16.
