Sycamores introduce 27 football recruits

TERRE HAUTE — Christmas came a bit late, or quite early, depending on your point of reference, but 27 recruits were welcomed to the Indiana State football program on National Signing Day at Hulman Center on Wednesday.

ISU got local players, you got experienced quarterbacks, ISU got some large-sized linemen — or as sportscaster Keith Jackson would say, some “Big Uglies” — and last but not least, ISU got a standout placekicker.

In other words, something to fit most every need for the rising football program.

“Our level [of recruiting] is stepped up a notch,” ISU coach Todd Miles stated. “When we were first recruiting, we were getting what we could get. It worked out the young men we did get, like Brock Lough, Ryan Roberts, Alex Sewall, ended up being good, even great players.

“Now being fully funded, it allows us the ability to go out of state as much as we want and to go to really good football programs like Cincinnati Moeller or Chicago St. Rita. To land these young men that are actually being heavily recruited by other schools says a lot of what is going on here.”

A huge immediate need was at the quarterback position, with starter Ronnie Fouch graduated. Miles landed three quarterbacks with college experience in Mike Perish (Western Michigan), Blake Loncar (Citrus College) and J.D. Pride (Minnesota), plus high-schooler Robert Tonyan (McHenry, Ill.).

“All three are mid-year transfers, already here on campus,” Miles said. Perish and Loncar both have “big arms”, Miles noted. Perish is 6-foot-3, Locar is 6-5, while Pride (6-2) will be more of an athlete/wildcat player for the Sycamores.

Miles also announced former Northview quarterback Trent Lancaster — a recruit a year ago — will compete for the quarterback position.

“Trent gray-shirted for us last year, meaning he sat out the first semester and just went to school part-time taking two classes … got 4.0,” Miles said. “Now he’s going full-time and will be in the quarterback mix this spring.”

Other local players added were defensive back Tsali Lough (Terre Haute South), offensive lineman Dakota Vermillion (Terre Haute North), running back Tyler Evans (South) and defensive back Andre Strohm (Marshall, Ill.). Logan Buske (South) has been changed from walk-on to scholarship status.

“We were able to keep our best local players at home,” Miles stated. He did acknowledge North’s A.J. Hughes heading to Virginia Tech, but joked he didn’t mind a potential recruit being landed by VT coach Frank Beamer.

Vermillion is one of those “Big Uglies” at 6-7, 295 pounds. Other large linemen coming in are Conlan Cassidy (6-3, 280), Nick Dachota (6-8, 295), Jose Mendez-Flores (6-9, 285), Erik Lalley (6-2, 280) and Jack Timmons (6-5, 300),

“You see North Dakota State walk out on the field and you say, ‘Wow, look how big they are,’ ” Miles said. “Well, that’s what they are going to be saying about us. [NDS] allowed an average of just 12 points a game last year. They won on defense, playing sound offense, don’t turn the ball over … and we’re trying to stock up our defense to try to get there.”

At the other end of the spectrum, freshman Eric Heidorn (5-8, 175) of Avon was recruited as a placekicker, a season-long bugaboo for the Sycamores a year ago.

“We had to cover the quarterback position, we had to cover our lines,” Miles said. “The rest we’ll sprinkle in … we can find those guys. But it’s important that you’re strong up front, big up front.

“Then you can allow [All-America running back] Shakir [Bell] to run wild and you can protect the quarterback. Defensively, you have to stop the run. So we wanted to go out and land young men that in the future will be able to help us do that.”
