TERRE HAUTE —
Racheal Mahan has worked her way into becoming a “spark-off-the-bench” post player for Indiana State.
While the statistics show that Mahan has averaged six points and four rebounds during ISU’s 3-0 start to the Missouri Valley Conference season, ISU coach Teri Moren’s primary interest is Mahan’s effort on defense. Mahan has superior strength and leaping ability.
“She’s probably the strongest post player we have,” Moren said. “She boxes out, she does all the little things you want your post player to do. She’s athletic, she can guard a 3-4, she can guard a 5 because of her strength.”
Mahan knows her defense and rebounding in practice are what earned her the trust of the coaching staff.
The No. 1 job “is get rebounds and the other one is play defense. [The scoring] is just a bonus,” Mahan said.
Offensively, the 6-foot-1 freshman has hit 7-of-13 from the field during MVC action in Hulman Center. She hopes to take her talents on the road as the Sycamores look to pick up a victory tonight at defending tournament and regular-season champion Northern Iowa.
“Her ability to score; she can play with her back to the basket and score,” Moren said. “Her athleticism, her strength, she has a tremendous nose for the ball.”
Mahan suffered a torn ACL late in her senior year of high school in Mansfield, Ohio, so physically she may not have been 100 percent when beginning camp last fall.
Gradually, Mahan has shown some great promise. Mahan’s future is bright, but if her strong play continues, she could be integral in ISU’s ability to contend for championships this season.
“Right now I want to be focused on playing my roles and helping the seniors accomplish what they want to accomplish — and that’s winning a championship,” Mahan said. “When I’m a senior, I want to be the one that everybody looks up to.”
Mahan seems to have adjusted to the intensity it takes to play at the Division I level.
“I love playing here. They want to win everytime we’re on the court,” Mahan said. “We’re always looking to push it. I love this group of girls. They love basketball as much as I love basketball.”
Senior Deja Mattox likes the effort of the freshman Mahan, who has four offensive rebounds during three MVC games.
“She’s gotten some offensive boards that are big for us. When she’s focused on that, she’s played really well,” Mattox said.

n UNI a chance for 4-0 — Northern Iowa was dominant against everyone in the MVC in 2010-11, and the Panthers beat the Sycamores by an average of 26 ppg.
Continuing to play stingy defense (and finishing with rebounding) and handling the Panthers’ full-court pressure will be two keys to the game.
The Sycamores’ turnover totals have been a bit high this season. Coach Tanya Warren likes to create miscues by opponents while her team takes care of the basketball as well as anyone.
“We didn’t handle a lot of their presses last year. They’ll be in a diamond press and a 2-2-1 and that extended 2-3 zone that we didn’t handle that well last year, particularly at Northern Iowa,” Moren said. “We have a press attack that we’re confident in. We feel that we’re going to get through that.”
UNI (10-5, 3-1 MVC) has played well even without last year’s Jackie Stiles Player of the Year, Jacqui Kalin, due to a torn ACL. The Panthers have experienced senior K.K. Armstrong at point guard and senior wing players Katelin Oney and Rachel Madrigal. And junior Amber Kirschbaum is “the most athletic 5 [center] in the league,” Moren said.
The 3-0 start is nice, but Mattox knows she and her teammates must continue to do what has been helping them win games.
“I think that definitely gave us some confidence. We can’t get bigheaded about it. We always prepare hard. If we go out there like we have in practice, we should be all right,” Mattox said.
If the Sycamores continue to believe that defense and rebounding will keep them in the game with anyone, the well-rounded play on offense gives them a chance to steal some games on the road.
“We feel good about our play the last three games at home. We’re going to hope to take our momentum on the road to face a good Northern Iowa team,” Moren said.
ISU has a record of 19-1 when holding opponents under 60 points. In ISU’s last two road games, they have held opponents under 60, resulting in a 67-59 win at Chicago State and a 47-43 loss at Northern Illinois.
Those nonconference games are in the rearview mirror of ISU.
“In-season for us, we’re 3-0. That’s our mentality. That’s going to be our approach. We’re hopefully going to keep it in the mid-50s. All road games are going to be a challenge for us,” Moren said.
“This team has really bought into the defensive end of the floor and our ability to rebound and end possessions with a good checkout.”
Bradley is off to a 1-3 start in MVC action after going 9-3 in the nonconference. The Braves’ 71-59 loss at Evansville snapped an eight-game road winning streak.
